About this listen

Barby Keel is used to all manner of creatures arriving at the door of the Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary where she lives and works, deep within the Sussex countryside. Nothing can prepare her for the arrival of Teddy, however, a neglected, traumatised puppy who is dumped at the gates of the sanctuary in a filthy box, terrified and desperate for someone to love.

Despite his scruffy appearance, Barby can't help but feel a spark of affection for the overgrown puppy. But with Barby living in a caravan along with her four other dogs, she knows in her heart of hearts that Teddy deserves a more stable forever home.

Wiping away tears, she waves Teddy away to his new life with a young couple, knowing that she's done what's best for the animal. But barely a few days later, Teddy is returned to the sanctuary, his new family unable to cope with his boisterous behaviour and his ever-growing size. Barby tries desperately to re-home him, but Teddy is rejected over and over again by his new foster families. Anxious and terrified of being separated from her, Barby is now faced with the impossible task of working through the traumas of Teddy's past to help the young dog.

But when she receives the devastating news that her beloved younger brother has received a shocking diagnosis, Barby's life as she knows it is thrown into disarray.

Can the love of a gentle giant help Barby through the unimaginable? And will Barby's unwavering devotion set Teddy free from the suffering he has endured?©2019 Barby Keel (P)2019 Orion Publishing Group

While I am full of admiration for this lady and her devotion to the Sanctuary she has created, I think she should give up writing and stick to what she knows. I expect she wrote this book as a way of raising funds for the Animal Sanctuary and I hope it's raised a lot, it's clearly a very worthy cause. Having said that, I had to give up at chapter 15 because the narration is truly appalling. The Narrator sounds like she's reading to children in story book corner in the local library, to be fair to her the book is written like a children's story, very repetitive and tedious in places. The Narrators voices of the different characters made them sound like they were either very old or retarded. Her voice for the authors best friend sounded like a wicked witch. All in all, I found myself rolling my eyes a lot at the puerile dialogue and dreadfully slow pace of the book thanks to the Narrator. I really tried to persevere but, I gave up after hearing the name Teddy and the word Creature for the millionth time and the constant description of every spoken word ie: I said sadly, I murmered, I exclaimed etc.... I may go back to it, but I doubt it. This book belongs in the childrens section, perhaps 8 to 12 yrs old. Shame, I do hope it's raised money for the worthy cause, that's what really matters, and after all, this is only my opinion.

Gave up at chapter 15
