Summary

Mary Creighton was just 15 when she found herself pregnant out of wedlock in 1960s Ireland. She dreamed of a happy life with her child, but that was shattered when she was sent away to Castlepollard - a home for mothers and their unborn babies.

Stripped of their clothes and forced into gruelling work whilst pregnant, those who survived childbirth were made to force-feed their children for adoption into wealthy families. Babies were ripped out of their mothers' hands, but Mary refused to let that happen to her. She managed to escape only to later lose her beautiful daughter to social services and the meddling nuns...who always managed to catch up with her.

After spending time in an infamous Magdalene Laundry and having another two children snatched away, Mary sought to find her lost children and demand answers for the atrocities committed supposedly in God's name.

cruelty of the nuns

Right from the beginning this story is riveting, it is well read and captivating. I can recognize the suffering of losing children and feel like this woman and other women have been wronged beyond comprehension. happy to recommend this book.

Stark but such an emotive account of Mary's life

A truly heartbreakingly honest read, aptly capturing Mary's experience of incomprehendable loss and clerical abuse

catholic church

This was a very sad story. Hopefully this would not be happening today. The nuns have a lot to answer for . It opens your eyes to the historical abuse with young women.

The baby snatches

A truely riveting story so sad but why did she not learn from her mistakes time & again. I know she was starved of love but she had Kathleen her first child although she wanted her so much she still didn't learn. I hope these nuns were brought to justice for the terrible crimes they committed.

Baby snatchers

Jeez Louise. All the way through this book all you’re thinking is let this girl/woman catch a break. These nun homes have a lot of answering to do.

Heartbreaking

Thought provoking book. Heartbreaking for both mother and children. It’s unbelievable how much religious beliefs can be misused in society of which I’m sure still happens today…this book really puts into perspective how people who you think can be trusted can be so cruel.

really???

I know the kind of horrors the women and babies suffered, ive read and heard the stories before, but the further into the book I got I couldn't help wondering where this woman's brain was, 3 children by 3 fathers should have taught her something, then another 2 by different fathers. and what happened to the sailor who sent her money
