About this listen

Joanne Phillips’ ordeal began aged 13 when she was gang-raped in her bedroom by local boys. Following the trauma, she dropped out of school, was befriended by an older man and was forced into prostitution aged 16.

Over the next six years, she was raped by over 500 men, starved, beaten, and transported around the country to brothels. Forced to have sex with men from all walks of life including lawyers, stockbrokers, doctors, a parish councillor, Joanne was even made to have sex with her former school headteacher—who didn’t recognise her.

Every attempt to flee failed. Police warned her mother and stepdad she had chosen the lifestyle and even threatened to charge her parents with living off immoral earnings if they allowed her to move back. Escape seemed impossible, until one day she couldn’t take any more.

Just before her 21st birthday, Joanne eventually escaped her enslavement. After being left alone briefly in a London flat, where she was expected to work, she took a chance after finding a bag of money and a handgun. Fearing for her life, she fled into the night with nothing but a plastic bag of cash. After catching a train to Northern Ireland, she found her real dad and hid at his home from her pimp.

Desperate to readjust to normal life, she found a job and went on to study at university. But when she tried to explain to a new boyfriend about her past, he didn’t believe any of it was true, so she vowed to keep the abuse a secret—until years later, a conversation with one of her own teenage daughters changed her life....

Absolutely fabulous, took a while to get into it, but once I did, I couldn’t stop listening

Amazing

What stood out most to me was the complete lack of parental care - there is only one fundamental person to blame for this miserable abuse of a child - her mother - who neglected early years care in order to progress herself and then turned a blind eye to what culminated - she should never be allowed to be in charge of a child ever again

HARROWING

A well written, interesting book with good narration. Just a sad subject matter. Jo was let down by so many people (most of all her mum!!) Someone should have noticed & helped instead of her having to help herself but she showed what a tenacious, strong, fearless woman she is!! Definitely worth a listen

Good book but so sad

All the way through this book I was screaming inside do what you need to do and get back to Ireland. Which she eventually did. But explained at the end of the book why she didn’t run for her life. Her mother needs to hang her head in shame. Good ending though.

First of all well done Joanne for finally getting away from this abusive man it certainly took years for you to finally realize he was living off your earnings & not caring about you. But let's face the person that started this was your mother she didn't care about what was happening to you she didn't want to listen because all she cared about was climbing up the social ladder, she didn't talk to you about boys (so obviously when the boys started raping you some how in your mind you just thought this was normally how boys treated girls) women like her don't deserve children. You didn't know how to open up to her because she never had the time to listen. She obviously had the same when she was a child as it show with your grandmothers attitude after you went out that night she just wanted you to go (why would she not want to talk & find out the reason). You were cut off from your father who you could have talked to & thankfully when you escaped you went back to Ireland & had his help.
This was a powerful account of Joanne's nightmare & I was shocked this was also happening in Dudley as I had read it happened in Telford & Rochdale with Jamaican taxi drivers & I was discussed that police didn't act on this sort of crime thank goodness now things are changing.

This is a sad and harrowing story. I had to listen in short bursts as I found it too upsetting initially. Well told and powerful.
