Summary

For 46 years, Carol Minto has quietly gone about her life, carrying with her the most extraordinary and heartbreaking secrets.

Born into poverty and with mostly absent parents, Carol helped to raise her nine siblings. But when she was just 11 years old, her older brother began to sexually abuse her. After four years, Carol managed to escape - and ran away from home.

Picked up by social services, they place her at Aston Hall in Derby, a psychiatric hospital now infamous for the ghoulish ‘truth serum’ experiments it carried out on children. Over three years, Carol was stripped, sedated, assaulted and raped by Kenneth Milner, the doctor in charge.

Eventually she is released back into the community, aged 18, and has a daughter. But the baby is taken away for adoption, and Carol’s trauma intensifies. In 2010, Carol finally plucked up the courage to speak out about the abuse she suffered - and received justice, at last.

In The Asylum, Carol tells the full story of how she overcame unimaginable suffering, to find the happiness and solace she has today as a mother and grandmother.

Very sad story of abuse

The narrators voice is very robotic. Reads in short sentences. Very off putting at first

very sad

so sad to hear what people went through and above all how parents were more worried about their name than their child .

How an innocent child can be almost destroyed.

This audio book is a true account of a life that deserved so much more.
It beggars belief that someone could be put through so much.
I have the greatest respect for Carol and her bravery.
I am so grateful for my parents and family who loved me and guided me safely through my life. At 72 I know I have a lot to be thankful for.
I hope homes like Aston Hall never get away with the treatment they dished out. Unfortunately we still hear of such places even today.
You are an amazing lady. Thank you.

Such a Brave Lady

This is the 2nd book I have listened to about the dreadful suffering that went on at Aston Hall Hospital. the first was The Hospital by Barbara O'Hare. Both stories very horrifying, however they show what determination and courage can do. Both women should be incredibly proud of themselves for getting through life despite what happened to them. Their families however should feel thoroughly ashamed for not believing them and failing to help.

Heartbreaking

I rarely leave reviews but I felt I couldn’t not on this occasion. This story was devastating throughout and had me in tears at multiple parts but Carol’s strength, initially for survival and later for justice, made me see it through to the end. Carol is a truly courageous lady who was let down by family and authorities in the most heinous way. This is a book that will stay with you a long while after you finish.

A whirlwind of emotions

Incredibly well written, the performance was superb. So much trauma and sadness, yet the innocence and hope really shines through. Am recommending this to everyone possible :)
