Summary
AMAZON BOOK OF THE YEAR 2011
WINNER OF AMAZON RISING STARS 2011
AMAZON EDITORS' CHOICE BEST CRIME NOVEL OF 2011
LONGLISTED FOR CWA JOHN CREASEY (NEW BLOOD) DAGGER 2011
Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous – Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.
But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. Four years later, struggling to overcome her demons, Catherine dares to believe she might be safe from harm. Until one phone call changes everything.
This is an edgy and powerful first novel, utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, and a tour de force of suspense.

Best Book 2020!!!
I usually hate books with a domestic abuse theme, or a child abuse theme, but decided to go with this.
I am so very glad I did! The story is gruelling at times but very credible. Catherine is no Heroine, and so utterly normal you can totally empathise with her choices.
Until the end, then Omg! When she releases her inner Goddess??? She becomes mighty, and you find yourself truly egging her on.
The Narrator, Karen, did an amazing job bringing this story to life. Her accents were really good too.
Happy to say this is my best book of 2020, buy with utter confidence.

Weak start but gets better!
I nearly gave up on this book a few times in the beginning. I thought not a lot happened for the first 5 hours or so and found Cathy quite irritating! However I am glad I persevered as it got better half way through, the last few chapters in particular I enjoyed. Good ending.

Uninspiring
I found it difficult to associate with any of the characters and, in the end, just skirted thtough the last part.

Terrifying and gripping
A terrifying journey into the world of an abused woman and the warped mind of an twisted psychopath. Very real and more common than we think. Many times uncomfortable to listen to.
Not light listening. I gave this book 5 stars as I could not stop until the end.

only in a thriller in the last 2 hours
this was a long book, and really the first 10 hours were the protagonist dealing with her OCD. the last 2 hours were great, but serious editing was needed to make this a better read.

Odd one
I really struggled with this one. Narrator was terrible. Probably an OK story but couldn't get past narrators awful voice

Powerful
This was a powerful story about domestic abuse, encapsulating living with it and life after. The author relayed the emotion of the victim and how she coped. I liked the style of the story flipping from life during the abusive relationship to present day. It expressed well the impact of fear and violence and also learning to overcome that fear.
All the characters were realistic and it wasn't in any way flowered up, quite the opposite with detailed description of incidents. The realism is graphic.
If you like a true to life story this is for you. Not for anyone who likes a mills + boon!! You are left in no doubt regarding how obsessive behaviour leaves another feeling. Thought provoking in many parts.
Very well narrated and I highly recommend this book.
