About this listen

It's often said that when tragedy strikes, the victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. But not Harry and Alice French.

Assaulted by masked men looking for a mysterious package and a man named Renshaw, Alice and Harry manage to convince them that there has been a terrible mix-up.

But nothing prepares Alice and Harry for the web they find themselves trapped in after their assailants leave. Especially as Alice hasn't been completely honest.

After Harry is approached by a woman named Ruth who seems to know more than she's letting on, Alice and their baby, Evie, disappear. When Harry realises he's become a prime suspect in their disappearance, he seeks refuge with Ruth and demands answers, knowing keeping out of police clutches is the only way he'll track his family down.

But how safe really are Alice and Evie tucked away in Gloucestershire with the mysterious Renshaw?

Intense and terrifying

Who was your favorite character and why?

Any additional comments?

When Harry and Alice are woken in the night by intruders of the worst kind they are sent spiraling into panic and fear but that is only the start of it. The men were looking for a package that was sent to someone called Renshaw, a man who is about to take Alice on a terrifying journey into an underground network of criminal activity of the worst kind.
This thriller is intense from the start and very uncomfortable. Bale isn’t shy about telling the whole story including the gory details. The characters are well-crafted and humanly flawed, they could be anyone and that’s what makes the story so disturbing. The inclusion of an eight-week-old baby heightens the fear factor and leaves the reader biting their nails.
The plot is brilliantly woven, tense and fairly fast-paced. The detail in the most terrifying parts of the story slows it down so we can really appreciate the horror of those parts. Bale really knows how to make you question the idea of safe spaces.

Twist and turns

I really enjoyed this book.. really well read and narration was varied from character to character.. loads of twists and turns throughout... obviously a little far fetched in places.. but that's escapism for you... I liked the main couple.. just a ordinary pair trying to get on.. great listen

An enjoyablelisten

Harry and Alice are new parents, recently moved to a new house and become embroiled in a gritty underground criminal gang when a parcel is incorrectly delivered to their house.

With action from the start, the story weaves between Alice's and Harry's experiences ad they are separated
and on the run from the gang. Each finds support from strangers who have also gone against the gang in the past.

I have to admit to being a little disappointed in the ending. It almost seems as though the author remembered an unanswered question and added in a brief answer at the end that didn't really explain much.

That being said I did enjoy the story and especially the narration, which was fantastic.

well performed and well written but where is the story ?

The reader is one of the best I've listened to and he's made a very average story into something that it actually isn't. I was on the edge of my seat with the urgency in his voice, pacing, excitement and fear all portrayed excellently. However, if I'd been reading this story I would've given up and not gotten to the end as nothing actually happens. Its basically just people chasing each other. There is a strong beginning and cliffhangers aplenty on the end of each chapter, but little characterisation, the baddies are just odd I felt and the motivation behind the secrecy and criminals not believable at all and hardly mentioned. I felt let down when I got to the end, like I'd been promised something threnody had it withheld, the enjoyment is entirely due to the reader, he could make a shopping list sound exciting and that's pretty much what he did here.

too complicated but fairly enjoyable

pretty good, well read but the story has one or two too many twists and turns making it rather implausible by the end

Excellent story

This was a great story, brilliantly narrated. I couldn't stop listening as I was dying to know what happened next. Full of twists and turns and kept me guessing till the end who could and couldn't be trusted. Would highly recommend
