About this listen

Meet the neighbours from hell, in the gripping thriller that reviewers and readers describe as "fast-paced", "chilling", and "impossible to put down".

When Jamie and Kirsty move into their first home together, they are full of optimism. The future, in which they plan to get married and start a family, is bright. The other residents of their building seem friendly too, including the Newtons, a married couple who welcome them to the building with open arms.

But then strange things start to happen. Dead rats are left on their doorstep. They hear disturbing noises, and much worse, in the night. After Jamie's best friend is injured in a horrific accident, Jamie and Kirsty find themselves targeted by a campaign of terror.

As they are driven to the edge of despair, Jamie vows to fight back—but he has no idea what he is really up against....

The Magpies is a gripping psychological thriller in which the monsters are not vampires or demons but the people who live next door. It is a nightmare that could happen to anyone.

A real page turner , excellent portrayal of characters and very sympathetic and gripping story teller . Plot kept me enthralled
right up to final pages and final twist to the story.

A gripping story

I finished this in 2 days I couldn’t stop listening .
Basically it’s about how things can get out of hand quickly without even knowing and you can get driven almost to madness but it’s also about being stubborn and stupid. Nasty neighbours don’t always show their face and hide behind a facade. We all have the means to want to get revenge but we don’t all do it …. we could lose everything
Enjoyed the narrator .
Jamie needed to grow up and chose some stupid routes .

Unputdownable.

Wow what a creepy psychological thriller this book is, Not many books get you hooked from the start but this did, I finished this book so quick because I could not stop listening,
This poor couple move in to this apartment starting a new life, but you may think you have the neighbours from hell think again!!
Everything about this story is brilliant and you really warm to the characters I would put this book in my top 10 without a doubt.

A slow burner but full of tension and guesswork. Will look out for more of Mark Edwards books!!

Brilliant story

Would you listen to The Magpies again? Why?

No, but only because I don't listen or read fiction twice.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Magpies?

Difficult to say, I really enjoyed it, was kind of second guessing a few of the major points in the story but it still really had me hooked. I have been walking the dogs longer, walking round the house with the earphones on and even tidying out my email at work so I could concentrate on getting to the end asap!!

Which character – as performed by Elliot Hill – was your favourite?

I think Jamie was well performed.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't laugh or cry at the book but I really got quite wound up by some of the chapters, especially towards the end (don't want to say for fear of spoiling it). I really wanted to just grab Jamie and tell him to stop and get out of the situation, but I can relate to why he didn't even though I would have been long gone!

Any additional comments?

I am really enjoying Mark Edwards books - this is about the 3rd or 4th I have listened to and am now researching which one is my next listen - pointless really as I will listen to that in a couple of days and go to the next one so it's academic. I have to listen to all of this author's novels - He is brilliant. Well done!

Had me gripped right from the beginning

I was expecting a lot more from this audio book going by the description. It seemed like a whole lot of listening for not very much to happen. It was just like you knew what should happen and it just sort of did happen, there wasn't any twists and turns or anything that gripped me as a listener. It was an ok listen but I wouldn't recommend it. You could probably read a forum or review with spoilers and someone could describe the whole story in about 100 words and save you time and effort.

straight forward <br />

Could not put this one down, areal page turner, will definitely be looking for more books by this author

Riveting

I enjoyed this story, an unusual premise which kept me listening. An element of doubt creeps in too. Good performance.

Quite unusual and compelling.

What made the experience of listening to The Magpies the most enjoyable?

It is not too negetive or very scarey, until chapter 23 that is!! But I don't like lots of murders or anything like the usual.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that I kept wanting to read to the end but didn't want to finish it:-)

Which scene did you most enjoy?

If I tell you that I would ruin it for you.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Although this book was a thriller, a lot of the things that Jamie said and how he said them made me laugh.

Any additional comments?

The Magpies is a very good book, it is not a humorous book. There is a lot of swearing in it. The narrator Elliott hill is extremely good and very realistic he sounded like Jamie, put the right emotional tones in the right places. The fact that I kept thinking that he was Jamie, tells you how good he was, how good the story and author was too.

Brilliant!

The narrator is very good. It's hard to say which part was excellent or what I wish to think I would not let happen if Kirsty was me, without revealing details for potential listener. These things do happen... Definitely worth a "read" 😉
