About this listen
Baking. It can get a guy killed.
When a retired detective superintendent chooses to take a culinary tour of the British Isles, he hopes to find tasty treats and delicious bakes.…
…What he finds is murder, mayhem, and mystery everywhere he goes.
His dog, Rex Harrison, a former police dog fired for having a bad attitude, does his best to steer the humans in the right direction, but he cannot understand why they don’t just use their noses–the answers are right there if they would just employ their strongest sense!
However, solving a few mysteries won’t get them out of trouble, for there is a master criminal behind many of the crimes they encounter, and they’ve just caught his attention.
Their adventure is getting deadlier with every destination, but these two sleuths are not going to be put off. With Rex’s keen sense of smell and Albert’s decades of experience as a detective, this pair are on the trail.
Or are they being lured into a trap?
One thing is for certain, they had better figure it out soon or they might be the next victims.

Haven't looked at another book since starting as wanted to see where this delightful pairing were headed. A very unusual idea of a man and dog working together and I learnt something about the different foods on the journey too.
can't wait to read the last 5 stories.
Funny and interesting

I wasn’t expecting an award winning book and the narrator and story is the perfect blend of “bad it’s good” that is perfect as an antidote to the run up to the general election.
I’ll admit so far I’ve only read the first book of 10 but if you’re looking for light relief from an okay story and slightly dodgy narrator (think your uncle Albert who tells the embarrassing stories at family gatherings) this is what you were looking for.
It’s the perfect antidote from listening to the politicians promise to give us the moon even though we know if they’re talking they’re lying.
I’m certain this combination of ex copper and ex cop dog has brought my blood pressure down.
Did I really rate it 5?

Lighthearted fun and throughly enjoyable.
Narrator’s stop/start reading is somewhat grating to deal with but bearable thanks to the fun of the story.
Pure whimsy

Throughout the 63hours of listening, my only question was why hadn't I heard of Steve Higgs before??
A brief internet search indicated that Higgs - a former Captain in the British Army - is an independently published Author. I take this to mean that he does not have a Big Publishing House Behind him to Finance 'Book Placement' and Advertising? That's a shame because these stories deserve to be widely known and enjoyed. I got through them in days, and even slowed down the player-speed in order to make them last longer.
The charm of Higgs' characters might appeal to Readers who enjoy Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club, as well as his recent ‘We Solve Murders’; also to those who enjoy MC Beaton’s Agatha Raisin Investigates, and the Hamish Macbeth crime stories?
There is nothing slap-stick or slap dash or cheap here: Higg’s is an acute and kindly observer of human behaviour and values, and he also persuaded me of his ability to see humans through a dog’s eyes (as well as dogs, alleycats, and seagulls through a dog's eyes!). The humour that arises from the interplay of the human and the dog worlds (and the central and endearing relationship between retired Detective Superintendent Albert Smith and fired Police Dog, Rex Harrison) is simply intrinsic to this observation, which is not simply wise, logical, charming and ‘ettiquetteful’, it is also life-enhancing: the sheer innocence and goodness and good fortune of the Man & Dog includes the Reader in it's embrace. Their contented way of going about things is contagious. I could not help feeling good when I read the stories.
The narrator, Charles Robert Fox, does an outstanding and fabulous job. He is The Whipped Cream and The Cherry on top of this Culinary Confection.
Not only does he avoid the pitfall of making himself obstreperous to the narrative, he voices the characters in such a kindly fashion - his rendition of Rex Harrison is particularly heart rendering - that it makes it unnecessary for me to imagine how it could have been read better.
One thing to Note: the sample five minutes do not give any clear indication of how good the stories, or the Narrator are. This is established very soon after.
If you don't love Dogs to begin with, this is a prime chance to fall in love now. If you don't love Human Beings, this is a prime chance to fall in love now.
If I could choose only one word to describe them, then that word would be [The Opposite of “killjoy”]: They are _Joyful_ in a way which is contagious.
I am off to purchase “The Final Five [Culinary Capers] and All the Short Stories” to continue reading. But it would be criminal not to first stand up and doff my hat to the Writer and the Narrator.
If you buy this (Bargain!) bundle, I only hope that you enjoy it better than I have done.
If you don't love humans, here's a chance to. . .
