About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Every family has a secret.

The mega-rich Pallanders are used to luxury – a castle in the Scottish Highlands, a villa in Tuscany, a billion-dollar fortune and an island in the Caribbean – but their perfect life is about to be shattered.

Every father has a favourite.
Sebastian Pallander dies, leaving a pitiful amount of money to his wife and children. His family fight over the scraps as old rivalries and bitter jealousies come to the surface. And when Pallander’s son is killed in mysterious circumstances, everyone suspects foul play.

Every killer has a motive.
After a desperate race for survival, the relatives gather at their estate to weather the storm. They all begin to wonder: who will be next? Where has all their money gone? And will any of them get what they truly deserve?

The story as a whole

I really enjoy listening to David Monteath, as well as stories by Denzil Meyrick. The book had a good review in the Sunday Times, and it didn’t disappoint. The plot did get a bit silly towards the end but I really liked the main character and the ending was a bit of a surprise. I can recommend this if you like a slow burning, complicated, story combined with excellent narration.

fabulous

Intriguing, witty, action packed and believable. just loved it. Have read / listened to all of this authors books and adored them all. Hope this is a start of a new series. The only downside is the wait for the next one !

Disappointing

A rather disappointing standalone (so far) from Denzil Meyrick that’s saved in by the ever-brilliant and highly listenable David Monteath. This is an attempt at a modern-day country house mystery, populated by faded Scottish aristocrats and new-money moguls. Unfortunately, none of them is in the least sympathetic or even interesting. The lead detective is little more than a rough sketch of a person who ultimately added little to the plot. There are a series of twists towards the end, none of which is in the least bit surprising. This is the second dud in a row from the previously reliable Meyrick. Hoping for a return to form soon.

everything you want in book

Finished in a day and a half, (very quick for me). Absolutely loved it, suspected every character at one time or another throughout the book. Plenty of suspense, enough laughs to lighten the mood , and top notch story line. Hope we will hear more of Cara Salt on the future. The new DI on the Tartan Noir block. Love her. She's sassy, fallible and above all likeable. More please Mr Meyrick .I hate the cliche unputdownable, but , well, in this case, it most certainly was.

Not the same without DCI Daley

I get that sometimes the author wants to write something different, but Denzil Meryck is synonymous with Kinloch, Daley, Scott and Hamish's wee drams. It was strange listening to the narrator use his Hamish voice for another character and I was expecting Daley to turn up at some stage. That being said this is a good book, with excellent twists at the end, I would recommend it to anyone.

A bit convoluted

It was a bit obvious from early on there was going to be a baddy police officer, that Salt would get with her old PS and Anna was going to be Seb’s lover… but that aside - it wasn’t a bad listen.

Enjoyable but ….

This book was enjoyable and pleasant to listen to, (great narration by David Monteath), but the book definitely lacked ‘something’ which I cannot put my finger on. I’ll try to explain.

The twists in the plot were good but I had worked out quite early on the big twists which seemed obvious to me. After that a lot of the clues were similarly obvious as was the predictable behaviour of most of the characters and because of that the end impact wasn’t a surprise.

The characters were not as rounded as in many of DM’s other books, but to be fair the main family here are incredibly shallow and they are definitely written as flat and uninteresting. Shame the main Inspector wasn’t given more attention because she is an interesting character as is her ‘ex’.

It’s definitely an intriguing story and worth listening to or reading, but I don’t think it is one of his best books.

Captivating as always!

Brilliant and captivating story as we are used to in the usual Meyrick style. There’s no DCI Daley in this story but it has the same feel as Meyrick detective tales. Sit back…pour a whisky and enjoy!
