About this listen

'An instant classic' – Daily Mail

The ship was doomed before it ever left port. His fate was sealed before he ever stepped on board. From R. L. Graham,
Death on the Lusitania is an immersive WW1 historical novel set aboard the ill-fated ocean liner.

Welcome on board the Lusitania’s final voyage . . .

New York, 1915. RMS Lusitania, one of the world’s most luxurious ocean liners, departs for war-torn Europe. Among those on board is Patrick Gallagher, a civil servant in Her Majesty’s government tasked with escorting a British diplomat back to England.

When a fellow passenger is believed to have shot himself in his cabin, Gallagher is asked by the captain to investigate the scene but one crucial detail doesn’t fit. The man’s body was discovered in a locked cabin with the key inside and no gun to be found. Was it really suicide? Or murder?

Gallagher believes one of the passengers is a deadly killer - one who could strike again at any moment. And all the while, the ship sails on towards Europe, where enemy submarines patrol dark waters . . .

'This engaging and well researched mystery is perfect for lovers of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers' – Philip Gray, author of Two Storm Wood, The Times Thriller of the Year

Critic reviews

Very much enjoyed this shipboard murder mystery with an appealing sleuth in Patrick Gallagher and a positive cornucopia of suspects. Totally absorbing! (Leonora Nattrass, author of Blue Water)
Masterfully weaves historical detail with an enthralling locked-room mystery. Impeccably researched, the story is not just a great crime tale, with a compelling central character in Patrick Gallagher, but a haunting imagining of the last hours of the Lusitania (Chris Lloyd, author of Paris Requiem, the Winner of the HWA Gold Crown for Best Historical Fiction)

Great historical romp really brought to life by the narrator who is excellent. Loved it

The narrator is superb

A classic 'hotel' murder mystery tale. Cast of numerous, murderous characters and a 'hero' maritime detective struggling against the odds. They're all stuck on a ship which is also at peril as it steadily moves into a war zone. Lots of twists and unexpected turns. Well written, with believable characters and a great period setting. The ending (no suprises) is very well portrayed. Well narrated with an engaging speaker.

This was not my usual genre (SF, modern thrillers, history) but I found this to be an excellent audio tale that I found hard to put down. Will definitely seek out more of this authors work.

Murder Mystery afloat...

Still slogging my way through this book and I’m finding it slow going to be honest. I’ve had a few false starts but I’m determined to finish it. Will update review if I do.

A bit slow going

A cleverly woven murder mystery with a sprinkle of spy work thrown in to make things interesting. A big well done to the narrator who read the characters with a sense of realism and captured their accents really well.

4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Murder mystery and espionage at its height

I was expecting a rather cosy crime thriller judging by the cover and was interested to see how that would work in this real life tragedy. It wouldn’t of course and there’s nothing cosy about this. There’s a huge range of characters and some are red herrings and subplots but I enjoyed the Trump-like sociopath millionaire. The sinking is justifiably terrifying and nasty but well written and the whole thing asks the usual questions about war, futility and patriotism. Well narrated too.

Bleak but engaging story of war and betrayal

Good story but perhaps a little too long. liked the narrator. He got accents spot on.

Good story well researched

A piece of history I knew nothing about. I don't usually 'do' war stories. But although based on certain facts the characters are full, believable and I thought, very engaging.

I would definitely recommend this book.

A well paced story full of interesting characters, I was completely hooked from the start and loved the narrator. Great leading character. This is a wonderful audiobook for lovers of historical mystery novels.

A very engaging and enjoyable story. Good narration too. Planming to look out for more of this author's work. Recommended.

A grand story

Overly complex in terms of plotting - could be very hard to follow who was on which side, which rather detracted from it. A slightly simpler plot line would have been a better alternative.
