Summary

'[T]his promising, poignant debut concludes with that vital ingredient: a well-crafted twist' THE OBSERVER

Can Henrietta find out what happened to Annie’s sister—before it’s too late?

Haunted by the past, Henrietta throws herself into a new job transcribing other people’s life stories, vowing to stick to the facts and keep emotions at arm’s length. But when she meets the eccentric and terminally ill Annie, she finds herself inextricably drawn in. And when Annie reveals that her sister drowned in unexplained circumstances in 1974, Henrietta’s methodical mind can’t help following the story’s loose ends…

Unlike Henrietta, Annie is brimming with confidence—but even she has limits when it comes to opening up. Ever since that terrible night when her sister left a pile of clothes beside the canal and vanished, Annie has been afraid to look too closely into the murky depths of her memories. When her attempts to glide over the past come up against Henrietta’s determination to fill in the gaps, both women find themselves confronting truths they’d thought were buried forever—especially when Henrietta’s digging unearths a surprising emotional connection between them.

Could unlocking Annie’s story help Henrietta rewrite the most devastating passages in her own life? And, in return, can she offer Annie a final twist in the tale, before it’s too late?

Heart warming, touching, beautiful

Was a little dubious at first, meeting Henrietta but then Annie comes along, two unlikely worlds collide and something amazing happens. So descriptive of the era I grew up in, realistic of family life and expectations. All in all brilliant…

Gets better and better

I was intrigued by the sound of this story but didn’t really know what to expect. To start with I was as just thinking that it was ok … but it really kept me interested the further I got into it and the more the mystery was unraveled.

Very enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed, the story was easy to follow but not predictable, it didn’t have any unnecessary twists that you see coming, just really good. It even made me tear up at one point which hasn’t happened with a book in a very long time, and it was done in a way where it didn’t feel manipulative. It was a pleasure to listen to.

Something yet nothing

The story started promisingly but the repetitive nature of it for at least half the story drove me mad. I became frustrated with the constant reiteration of ideas that I had grasped the first time. Several chapters devoted to description that did not add to the narrative or move it on. Hours that I will never get back.

Nice easy listening.

Easy listening with a a nice mystery, I wouldn’t call it a thriller but defo a mystery/detective. Definitely pulled at my heartstrings with a nice twist toward the end.

Good story.

Good story. Liked the twist towards the end. Found the reader's pronunciation a bit 'precise'. Loved Dave the dog!

Worth Reading To The End

Such a sad and uncomfortable first few chapters I considered listening to something more cheerful, but was very glad I listened until the end.
