About this listen

Ditching the stuffy hang-ups and benighted sexual traditionalism of the past is an unambiguously positive thing. The sexual revolution has liberated us to enjoy a heady mixture of erotic freedom and personal autonomy. Right?

Wrong, argues Louise Perry in her provocative new book. Although it would be neither possible nor desirable to turn the clock back to a world of pre-60s sexual mores, she argues that the amoral libertinism and callous disenchantment of liberal feminism and our contemporary hypersexualised culture represent more loss than gain. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-up culture, and ubiquitous porn–where anything goes and only consent matters–are a tiny minority of high-status men, not the women forced to accommodate the excesses of male lust. While dispensing sage advice to the generations paying the price for these excesses, she makes a passionate case for a new sexual culture built around dignity, virtue, and restraint.

This counter-cultural polemic from one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary feminism should be listened to by all men and women uneasy about the mindless orthodoxies of our ultra-liberal era.

A must-read for every woman

Full of uncomfortable truths but an absolutely essential read. I only wish I'd read it 20 years ago and saved myself from the misery of toxic hook-up culture.

Every Daughter Should Read This

A clear, articulate and thoughtful journey down the traps and pitfalls that life has to throw at our next generation. Wise words in an honest yet caring tone. I will encourage my daughter and son to read this when they are the appropriate age!

Profound and saddening

I’m a failed husband but I’m trying to be a good father, and look after my ex wife.

I found myself in tears listening to this. Wishing I had tried harder. Been better.

That’s not to say I’m taking all the blame but there’s so much I could have done better.

Every man should read this, even if they’re a good man. It reinforces that it’s right to be chivalrous, kind and enjoy the beauty of intimacy. Patience. Kindness. Courage. Gentility. Giving of time and energy.

Thank you, Louise. I hope many people read this. It is, in my view, essential reading.

fascinating

very engaging listen. Perry is undoubtedly brave in taking on liberal feminism which torches anything that opposes it. her analysis is much needed.

Superb - our generation needed to read this in our teens

As a 40 year old man, with a 10 year old son I don’t get to live with… this message hits home. I don’t know the answer as you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube… but I do know Louise makes me feel a lot happier knowing what’s going on and why. Better than the existential confusion I think a lot of us feel these days. Let’s hope our daughters and their daughters have it better in the years to come.

A welcome perspective

As a dad to a young girl I sincerely hope this perspective takes root in our culture and shapes the future. Men are painted in no better light in this book than by liberal or radical feminists, but it’s appeals to evolutionary biology and scientific research make it more recognisable to my felt sense as a man, which is an insight women deserve to have for their own wellbeing. I will be recommending it to the women in my life, who have in most cases bought into the liberal feminist take… at least publicly… and I don’t blame them, but now there’s an alternative.

breathe of fresh air

Really well written, thought out and evidence-based argument for a change in sexual culture. I hope it continues to gain attention as although I didn't agree with all of her points I think she has some very important things to say and like she aims for her message ought to meet young women

Sobering stuff!

Such a well written and well thought- out book. It makes a succinct argument that women have been conned by the sexual revolution and I couldn’t agree more. I highly recommend this book.
