About this listen

A gripping story of revenge - the prequel to Cruel Secrets - from the gangland governor, Kerry Barnes!

Bermondsey, London. With an absent father and a penniless mother, Cyril Reardon is determined to be the man of the house. As young as eight, Cyril is a charmer, a planner, and a risk-taker. A rare trip to the country, shows Cyril a completely different world, and it opens his eyes to how the other half lives.

A young man wants Cyril shot dead but receives a nasty scar and a few injuries that set him on a path of revenge. Little does he know that all the time he was being raised a lord, Cyril Reardon was being raised a gangster.

Only one of them is a gentleman. Only one of them plays the cards they were dealt.

I am a very big kerry Barnes fan but that didn't stop me returning my last two books of hers. This book brings you back to the start of her Cruel Secrets series and is just a brilliant listen, excellent story line and Annie Aldington's narration is as fantastic as ever.

Kerry Barnes at her very best

Being of East London stock I could relate to characters and their relationships probably more than many. The characters were very believable and could have been any number of people I met in my youth. At one stage I did think it was going to be just another story based on the Kray twins and there were certainly many similarities to those stories. I did however find it difficult to put down and enjoyed the listen.

I don’t usually leave a review, but felt compelled to do so. This book had me hooked right from the beginning! It’s gritty, fast paced and depicts the choice the main character made as to how to make his mark in life. No stilted boring bits, a triumph from Barnes!

Engaging!

The Reardon family from Bermondsey knows only too well that money doesn't grow on trees. A single mother, Maggie does her best to feed and clothe her sons, but her eldest, Cyril, soon realises she is out of her depth and starts to pinch whatever he can to help them survive. Their elderly neighbour, Mr Bates, sees Cyril’s potential and begins to teach him the lessons he will need to survive in the cutthroat world as a London gangster.

Barnes captivates the reader quickly as she brings the characters to life. Every chapter of this crime thriller will have you turning the page for the next.

Brilliant writing.

during this pandemic I can't sit still I can't focus. not much holds my interest. However , I listen to this and lived it. Yes the time scale I got confused with how old he was maybe it was me. the last chapter should have been a bit longer I laugh and cried and loved it. I'm going to try another book I hope I won't be disappointed
