About this listen
The body of a blonde young man found in the canal is discovered to be that of a journalist who had been claiming he was onto the story of a lifetime. The area where he was murdered turns out to be subject to a land dispute.
A young woman is adamant she remembers a childhood twin brother, but her father swears she’s an only child. And now a second young blonde is missing. Rachel King and her East Manchester CID team must determine what links this all together - or are they being led to draw connections which aren’t there? And if so, who is pulling their strings?
About the audiobook
The first in a thrilling new crime strand. DCI Rachel King is juggling her career and home life very successfully since her divorce. But now the girls are growing up and complaining she’s never home. And their dad has moved in next door! The last thing she needs is her criminal ex-boyfriend suddenly reappearing, especially when everything points to his involvement in her investigation. If she can’t keep her past in the past, will her future in the force be over?
If you like L J Ross, Joy Ellis and M J Arlidge, you’ll want to follow Helen H Durrant’s new team from their very first case.
About the author
Since childhood Helen H Durrant always longed to write and, after retiring from her teaching job, is now the author of three successful crime series - most regularly the Calladine & Bayliss books - set in the North of England. The Rachel King series launches Durrant’s fourth range in typical grim and gripping style.

This just makes her look incompetent and secretive and her personal life is about to collide into her case. At this point I was getting very cross yet, I was compelled to read on.

The main character is DCI Rachel King. Mother of 2, with her ex husband living next door and an on off relationship with one of the bad guys this is a real roller coaster of a read with a lot of focus on Rachel's personal life which makes it different in a very good way.
Helen has expertly managed to develop a character via a case. As work becomes entangled with her family and emotions we learn a lot about Rachel, the person at the same time as following a case (or cases) with more twists, turns and false leads than a game of snakes and ladders.
A young man is murdered after being tortured for some time. There is no motive, no clues and no evidence. The team is struggling to find a way forward. The only small lead they have is to Jed, a man with fingers in the dark world of crime but for whom Rachel has very deep feelings.
As we join the team on a rocky journey through evilness and secrets we learn a little about the team Rachel manages. A mixed bag of detectives some loyal some not so it is a very realistic team who work well together despite the differences.
Being new to audiobooks I am always surprised that the narrator's verson of the characters' voices differs so much from the one I imagined in my mind when reading the ebook. I thought the narrator sounded a little young for Rachel but that is just a slight niggle and not enough to spoil my overall enjoyment so it still earns the 5 stars.

There are lots of things going on in this story that will keep you interested.
I liked the characters especially DCI Rachel King, her involvement with a known villain definitely makes things complicated and there are plenty of secrets to reveal.
The narrator was great, her delivery enhanced the story and she was very pleasant to listen to.

Story okay, not one of the authors best, but that may have been just down to the atrocious narration.
