I’ve had this series in my library for months now and I’ve only gotten around to starting them. As the first book in the series, the concept and premise are good. It’s an intriguing world at play here and I’m definitely keen to check out the rest of the series.

Overall, the story at times could’ve done with more elaboration. The start was a little dry for my liking. There were points that could’ve done with some more story to set up the later plot. The main characters demise felt sudden and rushed. Very little detail and the story jumped to the main part. I can forgive it because ultimately that wasn’t the main part of the story but it would’ve been nice to have some more context and feeling for the reader / listener to take on board. It helps us connect with characters more. I think finding that connection would’ve helped with this book a lot.

The endurance test is another example of this. We’re told there’s 4 weeks of this ahead and it felt like it was in large glossed over. Sure there was a beginning, middle and end of it, but it could’ve been developed more to enhance the relationships at play. To breathe more like into the protagonists and antagonists. It was a lost opportunity to give us more reason to connect with the characters.

The same with the interrogation training. We are shown some interesting techniques but lacking development and glossing over the opportunity to really make us feel for the characters.

The biggest negatives from the book would be a lack of character development and a lack of attention to pace. I feel like the book could’ve been another hour or two in length and if it allowed for both of those points we’d have gotten something very well done.

Does that make it bad? No. I enjoyed the listen. I really like the concept and it’s a great glimpse into the world. The protagonists are likeable even if I feel as though I didn’t really connect with them as I’d ought to. This book was a great setup for a world I look forward to getting to know more. I have the rest of the series in my library so this will be my listen over the next few days.

The narration was good. It wasn’t bad and Craig does have a good speaking voice and does try to differentiate the characters based on the voice - which I personally love because it adds more to the story. The audio sounds slightly…tinny? I get the impression the recording detracts from Craigs real voice which I think is a shame as he’s not bad at narrating at all. I think sometimes there should’ve been more of a pause between chapters to allow the previous one to sink in momentarily. This pause could be taken between sentences at times too, as sometimes the narration felt a little rushed as well. But I did enjoy it. Craig has a good speaking voice and is easy to listen to. Just the audio itself sounds a little flat and tinny and I think that affects the overall listen.

Altogether a good listen but the main theme of feedback for author and narrator is the same. Pacing.

I really look forward to the rest of the series!

Enjoyable Start with Room to Grow

A promising start to a new series. Though it has parallels with sci-fi movies I've watched in the past, they were movies I liked, and listening to this is kind of like revisiting aspects of starship troopers. The narration can be a bit bland, it does perk up in places, hopefully this will improve later on. Overall a good enough beginning to keep me interested in discovering what happens to Victor, Diana and the rest of the crew in the next instalment.

This is an enjoyable story with a good premise however it lacks a certain sense of humour to get it beyond the dark dystopia. The characters are normal and little deeply unique about them relying on more the extraordinary circumstance of what is love after death beyond the responsibilities of life.

A very enjoyable start to a series, the characters are amazing and the story is too, the narrator fits exceptionally well, not Stephen Fry by any means but a very pleasant listening! I would write a better review but I have to start the next book in this series, so long story short, buy it! It's great.

A decent start to the series with a nice set up. it feels a bit rushed with the start glossed over. I feel the main character Victor could be with more background and a better explanation of his first demise. there is a section in the basic training with the long march where I felt it could have been better exploited to set up the antagonist better. I hate giving truly negative reviews but I didn't like the narrator. I found it difficult the follow who was talking as there was no differentiation to the characters, especially the females.
