Hyperion, one of the most celebrated Sci-Fi novels of all time and the first book in the Hyperion Cantos series, begins in the midst of an interplanetary war in the 29th century. Five pilgrims set out to the mysterious title planet in an attempt to prevent Armageddon, but while most of the planets in the Hegemony are connected by rapid transit farcaster portals, the journey is far from safe. Modified humans known as Outsters lurk in space stations between planets, threatening the very fabric of the planetary alliance.
Winner of both the Hugo Award and the Locus Award for Best Novel, Hyperion is easily one of the most important, groundbreaking books in Sci-Fi. It incorporates favourite elements of genre — including time travel, galactic war and intricate world building — making for a listen that any space odyssey fan will love. Dull!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. This pilgrims progress style collection of linked short stories is painful. Multiple styles are applied, under a common context, but the characters were unsympathetic and the stories generally uninteresting. It is possible that it may just be dated but I think I am being generous. As if it wasn't a struggle to get through the dreary storylines the book had no proper conclusion and ended abruptly expecting the reader to move on to the next in the series. That's not going to happen.
Would you recommend Hyperion to your friends? Why or why not?
No. It is awful.
Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?
The one saving grace was the multiple narrators but it was mildly confusing and not enough to raise the product above lamentable.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Definitely not

I don't really understand why everyone has raved about this book. It is dry, stilted and just plain dull. I have asked myself if I am just not a Sci-fi fan but this type of thing is just so much better from Issac Asimov or Iain M Banks

Pretty great
The only thing that’s a bit weird is that some of the voice actors are excellent, while other sound like their reading a commercial in a sales pitch tone.

Epic without much happening
The outer story line is short and simple and serves as the framework for the six sub stories within. They are wonderfully exciting, emotional, thought provoking and at times a little confusing (at first). I must know how it all ends.

Didn't quite hit the expected heights
Some great ideas and concepts, but ultimately just a series of overly long character back-stories. At times really interesting and at times somewhat, dare I say it, boring. This is really just part 1 of what is actually a 2 part book so I'll have to reserve full judgement until I read/listen to Fall of Hyperion.

aged beautifully
considering this book came out at the turn of the 80's/90's it stands up really well against modern sci-fi, so many books and tv shows since clearly use names, locations and themes from this book that I haven't picked up on before. really well read and put together story.

Some truly great parts, but falls flat elsewhere
I had seen this book recommended as a sci-fi classic and thought I should give it a try. Set in a present where a group of travellers tell the separate tells which bring them to their current meeting.
The first two tales are interesting and kept me enthralled, looking forward to an ending where the plots would surely merge. The narration was excellent and I was thoroughly enjoying the book.
The third tale is by a writer and is possibly worth reading the book simply for his musings on the written word - outstanding.
The next three tales are a bit of a chore, I felt as though I was wading through the story to find out how the book would end. The female narrator's voice really annoyed me, which was a shame as her story felt as though it was winding up to something.
It is at this point that the book ends, to be taken up in the second volume in the series.
I am really not sure I will invest the time in another book, just to get the ending of a story of which I enjoyed about 50%.
