About this listen
When Claire, an overachieving psychologist with OCD tendencies, hires Lana, an impulsive, out-of-work actress for a fake relationship, she figures the worst she'll have to endure are the messes Lana leaves around. It's only for a few months anyway. And it's not as if she'll enjoy all those fake kisses and loving looks. Right?
A lesbian romance where role-playing has never been so irresistible.
Contains mature themes.

This is the second book I've listened to by this author and will look forward to reading more of their work. So descriptive, so sensual and so much care around sensitive topics (trauma, body image/ weight).
The intimate scenes were meaningful, incredibly well written, and felt truthful and in alignment with the character's personalities. What a ride! ❤️
Enjoyable listen! Cracking chemistry, and warmth.

The “fake romance to true love” troupe isn’t my favourite, and I’m always a little apprehensive when starting a book from a new author. However, Jae’s storytelling drop kicked those nerves right out of me. Her descriptive imagery was fantastic, the comedic timing was on point, her characters were complex yet relatable, and the overall story was an enjoyable, fast-paced experience.
“Just for Show” is a delightful, opposites attract, fake romance to true love story. It follows Claire, an overachieving psychologist, with OCD tendencies, and Lana, an out of work actress, who’s mantra in life is carpe diem. After Claire’s fiancée breaks up with her minutes before their engagement party, her dream of publishing her romance self-help book is put in jeopardy. She has no choice but to hire a fake fiancée. Enter Lana, a vivacious and spontaneous, plus size actress, who will challenge Claire in more ways than one.
The attention to detail for all the characters was sublime, but Claire and Lana feel extra special. Their chemistry feels believable and natural, and more importantly doesn’t take away from their individual personalities. You get a real sense of who they are at their core, as well as their physical attributes. Both feel so realistic, complex, and 3-Dimensional; you can’t help but fall in love with them. However, Lana will always hold a very special place in my heart. I saw so much of myself in her, but her confidence is something I lack and is truly aspirational to me. I’m still relatively new to reading sapphic fiction, but from the books I’ve read so far, I feel it’s quite rare to have a plus sized, scarred, romantic lead character. It felt truly amazing to have a woman, who is described to look like me, be so unapologetic, sexy, and real. Representation matters, and this meant so much to me.
Descriptive imagery is something else I always look for when reading any book. I need to feel transported. It’s almost like an art form. It requires finesse, as it’s very easy to have too much description or not enough. I feel like Jae found the perfect balance. She chose moments that were essential to the characters and the overall story. There were some moments where I had truly visceral reactions to the imagery. Not just the steamy scenes, although I did nearly drive into a hedge because of one of them, but also the depiction of Lana’s panic attack and the accident. Combine Jae’s words with Angela Dawe’s portrayal, and it completely took my breath away.
Angela Dawe’s narration for this audiobook is utterly mind-blowing. Angela is my all-time favourite narrator and never fails to submerge you completely into the story. Every single character feels real, and their “voice” distinctive. Her accents are phenomenal, and it shows just how talented she truly is when she can portray a very believable Scottish accent, where other narrators would have struggled. She takes every story and elevates the words to new heights. The narration is quite frankly perfect.
This is the first book from Jae I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be my last. In fact, I’ve already bought Steph’s story “The Relationship Arrangement”, and Jill’s story “Just Physical”. I’m really looking forward to staying in this universe and experiencing the love between all these strong women.
If you’re looking for a fun, steamy, fast-paced story, full of laugh-out-loud humour and heart, this book is for you!
An utterly hilarious & heartwarming story!
