Summary
Tristram Abberley was an acclaimed English poet of the 1930s whose legendary reputation was sealed when he died fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Nearly 50 years later, his sister Beatrix is brutally murdered in her seaside cottage.
Her family are stunned by the crime - especially Beatrix's niece, Charlotte Ladram. But Charlotte has little time to mourn her aunt as 50 years of secrets begin to unravel. Beatrix is the victim of a dark conspiracy, one that her loved ones are powerless to defeat.
A harrowing quest for answers begins, one that uncovers a shocking tale of wartime greed and treachery and a vendetta seemingly without end.....

Deserves 10 stars!
One of my favourite of his books. Complex and a real web of stories. Highly recommend.

Ponderous
Very good plot but slow and ponderous. I struggled to finish but wanted to finish it although it would have been much more enjoyable with 15% fewer pages

Kept me guessing
The story kept me guessing right till the end. As I knew the geographical area in England well and had visited the Spanish one on holiday it drew me into the story. Great!

Dialogue Problems
Within the compelling stories of this author, we seem to have 'heroes' who are bossed about and who have no power of articulation. I find that annoying.

A story that keeps you engaged throughout.
The best bit of this audiobook is the narrator John Telfer, all the characterisations make the story come to life. I thoroughly enjoyed it

Not his best but still worth a listen
I've been an admirer of Goddard's novels for over 30 years and read or listened to most of them. This one from 1992 doesn't ring a bell. My aging brain may be the reason or that it isn't as memorable as some of his other books, such as the riveting Painting the Darkness which is an engrossing story full of breath-taking twists and turns. Hand in Glove is slower in pace with a gradual unfolding of the truth. The narrative depends on the main characters making some inexplicable or silly decisions, but without these there wouldn't be much of a story. I'm being more critical because Goddard has produced so many other outstanding novels. The present book is well worth a listen, especially as an entertainment as one does something else.
The narrator is excellent producing many different voices to bring the characters to life.

Good book
Enjoyed this book with many twists and turns. The main characters were rather unbelievable but so what. Very well read. First time I have listened to this author, but won’t be the last.

Cracking story
Cracking story, just wish the narrator could pronounce Charlotte! Not Char …lot. So irritating but just about overcome by a well written mystery. Does no one listen to it before it’s published on Audible?
