About this listen

On a mild autumn afternoon in 1882, William Trenchard sits smoking his pipe in the garden of his comfortable family home. When the creak of the garden gate heralds the arrival of an unexpected stranger, he is puzzled but not alarmed. He cannot know the destruction this man will wreak on all he holds most dear.

This is what makes Goddard one of the best writers of fiction alive today. And I do not say that lightly. He paints an innocent picture with believable characters so calmly and well timed. The story, starting plainly becoming more complex and interwoven until all you assumed was, might not be. The plots are so believable and put a mirror to the human condition so well. I have never found a poor piece of work by Goddard and have been reading his books since 1978.

Get it, you will enjoy it. Andy McNab it is not. Goddard shows you how complex ordinary life can get. So if you like a complex believable story with real flawed and human characters each with failing's, courage, hope and regret. This is for you.

Written well, and engaging from first page to last

It's the first Goddard book I've read but I really enjoyed it.. So many twists and turns... Yes it is a long book.. And sometimes I went back to re listen to a chapter.. My fault because I'm usually doing something whilst listening and with this book you do have to concentrate. So many twists and turns.. I almost gasped at one of the plot reveals near the end.. Never saw it coming!
It was helped by the wonderful narration of Michael Kitchen.. Never heard him narrate before.. He gets each accent so right
including the females speaking without over emphasizing.. A subtle distinction between the voices so you know exactly who's speaking.. He also has that quiet authoritive speech of the time set of the book... Together with the author he made this book worthy of a credit

Great listen so many twists and turns

The sign of a good book surely.
I enjoyed the narration, the story & the research. I think this was his 3rd novel & next book will be a more recent one as a comparison .

Tried FOUND WANTING next - big mistake....

A first class mystery writer, Goddard weaves an intricate tale and Michael Kitchen performs to the highest standard. My favourite is still past caring but only slightly, this is excellent storytelling

It has an underlying tone of D Abby. Although that’s not my thing but description of life of wealthy families is not too irritating. All in all nice calm read without much bloodshed or violence.

Good book for holiday read.
