About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Tokyo, Japan

Umiko Wada has had enough excitement in life. With an overbearing mother and her husband recently murdered, she just wants to keep her head down. As a secretary to a private detective, her life is pleasantly filled with coffee runs and paperwork.

That is, until her boss takes on a new case. A case that is surrounded by shadows. A case that means Wada will have to leave Tokyo and travel to London.

London, England

Nick Miller never knew his father and was always told he wasn't missing much. But when an old friend of his late mother says there are things that Nick needs to know about his parents, he can't ignore it.

When a chance encounter brings Wada and Nick together, they couldn't know the series of violent events set off by their investigations. And when they discover Nick's father might have been the only witness to a dark secret forever buried, they realise there are some powerful people who will do whatever it takes to keep it that way....

This is my first book by Robert Goddard and I will be coming back for more, good fast moving story and some really well written characters too.

Don't be put off by other reviewers' criticism of the narrator, I thought she was just fine.

Really romps along

The book seems to flit in-between genres: a cozy-crime heroine finds herself in a thriller(ish). The reader does a good job. Pleasent enough listen.

Robert Goddard tries his hand at cozy crime?

a bit long drawn out

Fiction and historical events are skillfully and convincingly woven together , the heroine is interesting and intriguing (I would love to read more books featuring Wada - please !) and the book is beautifully narrated.

compulsive read

The storyline, characters and plot were wonderfully drawn and it was a joy to listen to this book. Sad when it ended but hope the author will continue on with Umiko Wada. Love her!

The narrator was great but sometimes her pronunciation was difficult to follow when saying Japanese names

Fabulous book

Great, compelling storyline, but spoilt bu the narrator. Whilst I guess the reasons for choosing her ( great Japanese pronunciation and inflection!) it's not so good in the English. However, if you can rise above it and endure that annoyance, a v enjoyable listen! :)

Shame about the narrator.

I disagreed with the rather negative reviews by previous readers, particularly relating to the narrator. It wouldn't have been as entertaining without the Japanese pronunciation of the various Japanese characters' names. It was an unusual take on the private eye genre as I don't think I have come across unremarkable middle-aged women in this role. A nod perhaps to Miss Marple? The story moved along well and probably worthy of a single session listening as otherwise the many names and places could be confusing. At the end it looks like MG may be considering a sequel? Yes please. I will look out for it.
