Summary
It could be your average suicide. A man found dead in his car, engine running, parked at the end of a lonely track, a tube feeding deadly fumes from the exhaust through the window. Except for the seven-year-old boy still breathing in the boot...
For Jonathan Kellaway, the past is somewhere he chooses not to go. Dead friends, lost lovers and a family dynasty hell-bent on self- destruction lie buried there.
But if he is to uncover the truth, he must confront all the secrets which have consumed his life, and which may yet consume him...

Excellent plot brilliantly written and told
The story was told brilliantly and the twist was so clever. I found myself emotional and understanding about things I would not have believed before.

Well narrated but not Godard’s best
I find Goddard’s books a bit irritating. Quite difficult to get inside the narrator’s personality or motivations. The plots are crafty but over complicated and this one was no exception. So, as with other Goddards, I liked the first half much more than the latter parts.

Subtle sinister and riveting
The author has created yet another complex novel of many layers, observations and polarities.
Very well narrated even though I must say Michel Kitchen and Goddard fit as a combination to perfection but I admit my bias.
Recommend utterly.

Persevere
I was initially put off by the narrator but I am so glad I continued listening. The story kept me engaged.

Another excellent tale of mystery and intrigue by Goddard.
Reliably good story - Goddard seldom disappoints. The usual twists and turns made better by excellent narration.

Consistent with the brilliance of all of his work
I thought that I had listened to every one of his books and was delighted that a couple more have been made into Audiobooks.

Great story with many twists and turns.
I really enjoyed this story that let my mind escape to another time and place, with an underlying mystery weaving its way throughout the tale. Strong memorable characters so beautifully narrated. I will remember this audible book as left a deep impression.

Oooh it's a good one!
I really really enjoyed this - classic Robert Goddard! - had me hooked straight away even though you do kind of know WHO is responsible for everything early on, it doesn't matter, you just get swept along by it all and having it set largely on the beautiful island of Capri was an added bonus. The narration was absolutely top-notch. I've not heard anything narrated by Richard Trinder before but he will now be one of my favourites.
