Loyal Fan

I love the Bryant and May series.
I think Christopher Fowler is a brilliant writer. His characters are fully formed, wonderful and maddening in equal parts, including London.
His plots give respectful waves to every variety of mystery tale and always deliver laughter and sadness. Arthur is a grumpy, selfish old git, even as a young man, and I adore him.
They are my favourite book series, in any genre.
This collection of short stories is a bag of gems. It hops about on their timeline and is a marvelous introduction to their world.
This was a reread while I await the second collection, due in a few days. Can't wait!

A pleasant surprise

What a wonderful read. I now have to get the others in this collection. Everything about this book is good and the narrator is included in this.

Usual fare but as short stories

I picked this up not realising that it was a collection of short stories with an author's introduction. Once I had realised what was going on it the stories are usually quite clever and a really enjoyable listen.

One minor criticism of the narration is that young Bryant has an old man's voice.

Superb short stories.

These short stories weren’t like the usual run of the mill in that they made sense and had an ending.
Each a mini book with a whole book feel!
As ever excellent narration from Tim Goodman.
Thank you Mr Fowler, I’ve read them all now and it was an absolute pleasure.

Victor rides again

Christopher has one heck of a sense of humour, Bryant is what would happen if Victor Meldrew got into detective work. People around me think im losing my mind, as i listen to it using my discreet little earpods, i often just break out into full on belly laughs for seemingly no reason. Narration is spot on. looking forward to listening to all his other books. Brilliant.

My favourite crime writer, but narrator is awful

Would you consider the audio edition of Bryant & May - London's Glory to be better than the print version?

I don't know, as I like to listen to the audio books while I work.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Both the main characters, Bryant and May. Although they are both older, they are very different in character. May is quite modern in his outlook, whereas Bryant, to use a cliche, 'thinks outside the box'.

What didn’t you like about Tim Goodman’s performance?

His voice reminds me of the narrators on audio tapes my children use to listen to when they were young.
While he just barely gets away with the voices for Bryant and May, the rest of the characters are completely wrong. Christopher Fowler's fabulous books need a much meatier reader. Tim Goodman's voice is far too cosy, more suited to an Agatha Christie, than the gutsy language and grisly plots of these books.
If it wasn't for the superb storytelling of these books, I would have given up listening a long time ago because it is just so irritating.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Always, but I don't because I like to savour them. This one had the added advantage of being a collection of short stories.

Any additional comments?

Please, please find a more suitable narrator.
