About this listen

A maritime mystery from Edward Marston, author of the best-selling Railway Detective series.

September 1907. George Dillman sets sail from Liverpool to New York on the Lusitania's maiden voyage. Posing as a passenger, Dillman is in fact an undercover detective hired by the Cunard Line to keep an eye out for petty crimes. But after some uneventful days aboard, the ship’s blueprints are stolen and then a body is found.

As Dillman works to get to the bottom of the crimes, he makes an unusual friend, first-class passenger Genevieve Masefield, and the two uncover secrets aboard the ship that prove explosive.

The Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was sunk in 1915 by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 passengers and crew. Lusitania held the Blue Riband prize for the fastest Atlantic crossing and was briefly the world's largest passenger ship until the completion of the Mauretania.

Previously published under the name Conrad Allen, the Ocean Liner series is relaunched for a new generation of listeners.

Bit of a slow burn but a good cosy mystery

I spent the first half of the book enjoying the setting and some of the characters but waiting for a murder. Rest assured it does come and it is a mystery worth unraveling.

A really entertaining period mystery

I enjoyed this book. Loved the setting, and the characters. The Edwardian age is a particularly favourite of mine and we'll as the great liners of the period and this novel combines.both. The story is well written and entertaining with some great touches. I will definitely be reading more of these. James Langdon gives a fine performance and a good range of accents and is easy to listen to. A good one.

Enjoyable adventure at sea.

I really enjoyed this story, it was well crafted with real characters and kept me guessing till the end. I kept changing my mind over who I thought was guilty so it was well done. I'll definitely try some more of these books.

Great narrator.

Alright to spend some time

This is a simple historical murder mystery with some engaging characters. Nothing exceptional though good for a holiday read or to spend some mindless time.

Something lacking

It’s a nice listen, with an excellent narrator. It was just missing a little sprinkle of Golden Age magic. I want to hear more though as it’s enjoyable.

Fair to middling murder mystery

Definitely does not have the feel of a novel set in 1906, the language and social etiquette is completely wrong and this sets the whole book off kilter.
Well narrated, just the plot doesn’t have any depth
