Summary

Perfect for fans of Stephen King's IT, a group of friends return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they first stumbled on as teenagers in this mesmerizing odyssey of terror.

An atmospheric, haunting thriller, full of memorable characters and sublime terror, from the author of Come with Me

For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together.

Nor can they deny the memories of that summer, so long ago—the strange magic taught to them by an even stranger man, and the terrible act that has followed them all into adulthood. In the light of new danger, they must confront their past by facing their futures, and hunting down a man who may very well be a monster.

Excellent coming of age horror.

I’m a sucker for coming of age tales and this is one of the best I’ve ever read. I loved December Park by the same author but this is even better. Brilliantly narrated too.

Highly recommended.

Dull

Excellent narration, shame about the story. The story just seems to plod along and never really gets going.

Best one so far

Heavily inspired by King but in a way that feels more like an homage to SK’s work and not just imitation. Narration was good. I really enjoyed this listen.

Creep-o-meter on red alert

To say I loved this is an understatement. This is the 3rd book I've read / listened to by R Malfi. December Park and Come with me, this is my favourite so far. He has an amazing ability to create characters that you really care about as children and the adults they become.
This book was way up on the creep-o-meter of horror but low on the gore.
The narration was perfect, engaging and really bought the whole story to life.
I cannot recommend more highly. If you love horror please read this..

Voice rhythm excellent

Intricate story loved most of it - lost me a bit near the end but would work well on film, good characters . My one bugbear is that there always has to be a super bad mother, risks creating the old eve was the real problem all along concept

Just brilliant

I don’t give 5* lightly and as an avid audible listener have a lot to compare it to. So well narrated and a story that is detailed, dark and absorbing. I didn’t want it to end

Fantastic! I loved it!

I absolutely loved this novel. It kept me intrigued right up to the end. The characters were likable and I enjoyed being with them on their journey to find the Magician. The themes of destiny/nature Vs nurture and alcoholism were deeply moving, well explored and interesting.
I liked the narrator too. His voice for the magician was perfect.
