About this listen
You can't see them. But they can see you.
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams.
Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time. Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers. Who are the watchers and why are these creatures keeping them imprisoned, keen to watch their every move?

Amazing
Steady paced and binge worthy. I expected it to not really be my thing at the start but pretty quickly turned into a wonderful listen. Suspenseful and keeps you engaged right till the end, love it!

Outstanding!
A suffocatingly claustrophobic and unsettling read. This book goes beyond horror, as it is crafted beautifully and has a lovely melodic feel to it. Outstanding performance by the narrator, who created a really immersive experience. I’ll keep my light on!

A well-read audio.
I loved how the writer got into the character's heads and showed how they interacted with each other and their environment.
Some readers might find the isolation of the story tedious, but the characters batted off each other enough to keep me interested. If I was reading this story instead of listening to the audiobook, I might well have lost interest.
I found the narrator's voice very clear, and she gave the main characters individual traits, so there was no confusion over who was who.
I look forward to more coming out from this author and the narrator. They are a winning combination.

Melodic
Perfect if you want something to put you to sleep. Awful narration. Couldn’t say what the story was about because I was always asleep in minutes.

Good little story
It’s not my book of the year or anything but it was a good story with a decent narrator. I come across a lot of rubbish lately with audio books so it was nice to come across this one! Defo worth a listen.

Great Little Gothic Horror
1st off, good narration. Not much variation between characters, but excellent clear reading without any overacting.
As to the story itself, I genuinely couldn't put it down--"The Watchers" reads a lot like a James Herbert novel, if Herbert were a) still alive and b) rather scarier. The book isn't terrifying and it avoids any gore or shock-value descriptions (as in the tradition of gothic horror) but the atmosphere is genuinely creepy and I found all the characters both likable and realistic.
I recently gave up on a Dean Koontz series for being unimaginably insipid, with nauseatingly self-satisfied characters and a tissue-paper plot, and this was essentially the polar opposite: characters who have all the doubts and fears actual humans do, a modern and inventive take on old legends, and a style of elegant, well-crafted prose typically seen in classic literature. In fact, I reckon this is a lovely little treat to listen to, for anyone who likes both horror novels and what's often referred to as "literature" because it combines those 2 things beautifully.
I'd say I'm looking forward to the next book by this author; but as his 2nd book was the free listen that brought me to this, his debut novel, I think I'm out of luck. Believe you me, if he's got a novella or a short story collection somewhere, that's my next stop! Delightful reading for Halloween (aka the month formerly known as October) and I intend to indulge.
Good if you like: James Herbert, H.P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley
Not like: Aron Beauregard, Richard Laymon

Couldn't stop listening
This book is amazing, very gripping. I only put it down while I was sleeping. Bought it yesterday and finished today! The narrator was great, and I loved to hear her Irish accent telling a story in Ireland. 🇮🇪
