About this listen

Disturbing. Original. Terrifying. The 'master of horror' is back with the chilling tale of what lurks in the walls of an abandoned hospital.

In this abandoned hospital, pain lives on... and it wants revenge.

St Philomena's military hospital has been abandoned for over three years. Now Lilian Chesterfield, who works for one of the most successful building companies in England, is in charge of developing it into a luxury housing complex.

But as soon as she and her colleagues start work in the Jacobean-style mansion, their dream turns into a nightmare. They hear screaming from wards full of empty beds. They hear doors slamming and find cutlery scattered over the kitchen floor. Then they see faces peering at them from the mullioned windows.

Lilian is pragmatic–she doesn't believe in the supernatural. But just when she's put her mind at rest by scouring the mansion from top to bottom and finding nothing, a former patient of St Philomena's arrives with a warning. The hospital is haunted. And it is haunted by something a thousand times more terrifying than ghosts...

Good story but can be repetitive, narrator does well with different characters and accents. Worth a listen.

Enjoyable, but does become a bit repetitive

The narrator made this book for me the story itself is a bit meh but not really bad just not something that for me is original

Predictable but not bad

The twists and turns slapped me!

The different turns this story had, the folklore it drew on. What a ride. Superbly narrated, the narrator excelled in the accents. Just superb.

One of the best I have listened to in its genre!

This is an interesting take on the haunted house story. I found it stopped being scary about halfway through and felt more like a thriller at that point, which isn’t a bad thing! I did have some issues with the female lead being a little questionably portrayed in places. Overall this was a good story and worth checking out if you like haunted houses!

Good story

Emma Gregory is a masterful storyteller who created every character (whatever gender) superbly.
A really gripping tale that keeps you riveted although I was a little disappointed by the ending - but hey, this is a great listen!

Fantastic narrator - one of the best

Truth be told, it’s alright. You can see where other haunted house stories have influenced it. The performance of the narrator is pretty good.

Decent story

Emma Gregory’s narration kept me listening to this story to the end. I lost interest after the 3rd graphic description of a body being blown apart. Found the heroine annoying eventually.
Some convincing characters but tedious in parts.

Mmm - difficult to keep interested in.

Not sure if it was meant to come across as slightly tongue in cheek, or if it was due to the narrator’s slightly comical voices for the male characters. That being said it was entertaining enough. Narration was good otherwise but the storyline lacked any real depth.

Predictable but Enjoyable

Nothing to say except it all centred round the neck of my woods and I shan’t go looking for the hospital any time soon

Yet another masterpiece

I thought that this book was going to be great, as I like a good ghost story and the set up of the book was interesting. However, the dialogue between the characters just doesn't work and the female protagonist isn't likeable.

Good idea, badly executed
