Summary

One terrible case always haunted detective Matt Ballard. Now many years later, the killer seems to be back. And this time he's after Matt.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught.

Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Then another murder happens, with some of the hallmarks of the old case. Has the killer returned, or is this just a sick copycat determined to ruin Matt's life and reputation?

Bit disappointing

Good story but irritating narration and poor research. The narrators regional accents were poor and confusing. The adoption information was factually incorrect which I hound very distracting. A shame because otherwise a gripping yarn!

Engrossing

The story line is so convoluted it keeps you guessing right to the end.
The characters are interesting.
You start to try and work out what exactly is going on only to have each theory disproved or was it!!! Very clever writing.
My only grumble is the narrator he really does not do women or accents well. I was 2/3 through the book before I realised Bryn was welsh and I’m from Wales. He sounded more West Country to me.
When he was doing a female voice it became very bland with no characterisation at all.
None of the above stopped my enjoyment of the story but a different narrator would have increased it.

Horrible Narration

Have listened go all the other Joy Ellis series so thought I would start this but I couldn't finish it the narration was unlistenable, the women's voices were particularly excruciating....

Another brilliant story by Joy Ellis.

Could not wait to get to the end to find out how this terrific story would end. The people are described so well, you can see them in your mind.

Tangled Web

Bumbling Bobby bungles his way into capture by sadistic killer causing the death of his best friend. The story is packed with awkward irritating incongruous Americanisms, so suspect the author is American or writes for that market. English cops don't have "nightsticks"; they have truncheons or right angle batons.

The tale is a complicated farce, although enjoyable to listen to as you try to untangle the plot, it has a dismal disappointing conclusion. It was impossible to like any of MCs, as they all did underhand and deceitful actions.

The fine narration suits the plot.

IT WAS OK

I thought I had guessed the twist, but was wrong.

Far fetched, and conversation between supposed experienced police is naive and sounds like they are all brand new , but generally very good. I did not guess all of the twists until near the end, and got a few wrong.

couldn't finish it...might get the book

the narration totally spoiled this book. even a great story couldn't persuade me to carry on. the main character sounded like it was made by AI... I've heard this narrator do other stuff and he was fab. it's just not right for this book.

poor narration

for me this book was ruined by the narration, I'm not sure what accent was being used, it seems to be a mixture of American, West country, and robot!
as others have said; all the female characters sounded like they were children, and characters from the authors other books; which appear in this one too; like roary the pathologist, I have been given a completely different accent to what they normally have. Rory's normally a very flamboyant/camp Scottish person (which suits the character) in this one he's posh English.
I like the story except, there was a slight old-fashioned view towards the female police characters, and will continue with the series as I've seen that the narrator was changed for the next ones.
