About this listen

A grisly death staged as an accident. Can a hard-nosed copper track a killer as elusive as a shadow?

North Yorkshire, England. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is reluctantly easing into life in the dales. As he gradually acclimatizes to the slower pace of the countryside while he awaits a return to the city, he’s called out to inspect a farmer’s crushed body. And despite the doctor on site declaring it a tragic mishap, the seasoned police officer rolls up his sleeves when evidence points to foul play.

Frustrated with the lack of witnesses and suspects, Grimm whips his easygoing team into action when a second corpse is found. And with a mysterious clue the only connection and the not-so-quiet village in self-imposed lockdown, the city-bred cop hunts for a link lethal enough to lead to murder….

Can he stop the picturesque countryside from becoming a blood-filled cemetery?

Best Served Cold is the riveting second book in the DCI Harry Grimm crime fiction series. If you like square pegs jammed into round holes, deeply textured plots, and lively local color, then you’ll love David J. Gatward's riveting puzzle.

It was lovely listening to the author at the end of this book. I have enjoyed the stories of books one and two.
I have found the narrator’s loud shouty gruff interpretation of Harry Grimm to be a bit troublesome, although get that it does match the DCI’s personality. Maybe he’ll soften and we at least are aware when it’s his words, not so much for the other characters.
I am continuing with the series as it’s great when the characters start to develop and these characters have much potential, along with it being set in a lovely part of the country.

One irritation though, the early books are not clearly marked with the order of the books. I had to read the write-up of books to find number three, although that book 20 was clearly marked!

Second book in the series that I have listened to and enjoyed it just as much as the first.
Being born & bred in Yorkshire i can so identify with the characters and love the way that Harry Grimm is trying to come to terms with the concept of Pie & Peas and fruit cake &cheese.
Making me miss Yorkshire.

Loved the Characters

I'm loving this series! Born in Yorkshire, my family moved to Sussex when I was at primary school, so I was perfectly used to eating cheese with cake, and Mischief Night, and wearing wellies, and eating Yorkshire pudding with gravy for first course, then loads of seasonal vegetables with roast meat for mains and apple pie with cheese or rhubarb crumble for afters.

I can't wait for the next episode!

Another corker!

Harry Grimm just gets more engaging and enjoyable as his character develops.
A brilliant sequel to Grimm Up North this story resonates with dark revenge and light humour wonderfully blended together.
Totally hooked ! Bravo Dave! Keep em coming

Nothing grim about Grimm

Really enjoyed this. The author tells a good story with humour thrown in too. DCI Grimm is called in to investigate when the body of a local farmer is found. At first the police thought it was an accident and that the man had been run over by his own tractor, but suspicions arise and Grimm and his team begin their investigations.
