El 17 de diciembre de 1819 Bolívar, el Libertador, asistió en Angostura del Orinoco a la proclamación de la que el llamó entonces "República de Colombia", una nación promisoria conformada por Venezuela, Nueva Granada (hoy Colombia, así llamada desde 1886) y Quito (hoy Ecuador). Esta criatura política era su sueño áureo, su obra maestra política para coronar la gesta prodigiosa de sus victorias guerreras. Once años después, con premonitoria exactitud cronológica, Bolívar moría en Santa Marta y con el agonizaba la unión bolivariana de las tres repúblicas.
