Una madre y su niño viajan en canoa por el caudaloso río Atrato. La madre es blanca, el niño es negro. Entre manglares, frutas y trenzas, la narradora le va contando a la pasajera de al lado su infancia, sus recuerdos y cómo el pequeño llegó a su vida una mañana calurosa. La lancha avanza, la inquietud se acrecienta. La mujer preferiría no llegar o dar la vuelta. Esta es una historia sobre el arraigo, el miedo y la maternidad en un contexto de violencia, sobre los peligros de la selva colombiana.

In the city of Quibdó, a mother and her child embark on a canoe trip down the mighty Atrato River, the only route that allows them to penetrate the thick Colombian jungle. The journey is long, slowed down by several stops. As the small boat proceeds along the river, surrounded by mangroves, the mother tells a fellow passenger the story of how the little one came into her life and why the two of them are travelling along the Atrato. But as the boat advances, the mother's anxiety grows: she would rather not arrive, or turn around altogether.

Ein außergewöhnliches Debüt von Kolumbiens literarischem Shooting-Star. Eine junge Mutter und ihr Sohn durchqueren in einem kleinen Boot den strömenden Fluss Atrato in Kolumbien. Sie ist weiß, er ist schwarz. Die beiden sind auf dem Weg zur leiblichen Mutter und im Laufe der Fahrt erfahren wir ihre gemeinsame Geschichte. Dabei fließt die Erzählung wie der Fluss, der sie trägt. Er ist die Ader der Landschaft, eines Urwalds voller Früchte, Tiere und Düfte, aber auch die Ader des menschlichen Lebens.
