Joseph Holland dedicated his life to helping Harlem's homeless. His tireless outreach efforts revealed an essential truth: people lead fulfilling lives because of their foundational values. Drawing wisdom from his real-life experiences, Holland developed a method that allows anyone to build a solid spiritual and moral foundation to thrive in the face of adversity, live each day with inspiration, and rise to his or her divine destiny.

As a diplomat's son, star athlete, and Harvard Law School graduate, in the early 1980s, Joseph Holland had a world of opportunities awaiting him on Wall Street and in corporate America. Instead, Holland moved to the inner city, driven by a divine calling full of unfolding mystery and challenge. He found himself in Harlem during the nadir of its blight and endeavored to contribute to a neighborhood that was tough in every sense of the word. Holland earned his stripes as an entrepreneur/activist embracing a vision of personal and community transformation.

Celebrating the vast breadth and scope of Black excellence, Make Your Own History spotlights the principles of success exemplified by the lives of 120 Black role models who have blazed trails throughout American history. Make Your Own History gathers together motivational quotes, historical contexts, and enlightening precepts from Black trailblazers spanning the eighteenth century to the present. These insights encompass twelve central themes: courage, self-discipline, compassion, perseverance, teamwork, integrity, industriousness, self-reliance, optimism, purposefulness, civility, and faith.
