Moments later, a line of warriors appeared—four of them. Markings on their clothing, hair design, and style of weapons pointed to strangers from an unknown tribe. Ahote and Tocho figured they were probably passing through from the lowlands, hundreds of feet below where they currently traveled. But there was something about their demeanor Ahote didn’t like—they weren’t as alert as one would expect on the trail, especially in a strange area. No, the warriors appeared secretive in their movements, as though realizing they trespassed. Or something.

A hike. A portal. A journey. It was time. She retreated to her position directly in front of the archway feeling the immense void of the light’s source drawing her toward its opening, filling her with an almost physical compulsion to step inside. The voices! Closer now! With little time to think, her mind formed a picture of her mother looking back at her, smiling. “Oh, what the hell!”
