About this listen

Have you ever wondered what happens when you die? If there is a God? And did he ever have a plan for the world?

When committed rationalist and atheist, Ralph, dies on his honeymoon he discovers, much to his unhappy surprise, the answers to all of these questions.

He finds himself on a cloud and working for a God who is very unhappy that his plan for the world has all gone horribly wrong. And if Ralph is ever going to make it through the pearly gates to enjoy an afterlife with his late (but still much loved) bride, he has to go back and fix the world.

A very tongue-in-cheek satirical take on religion, belief and petty office politics, this sitcom is bursting with imaginative, fresh writing.

With added dodos....

What disappointed you about Working for the Big Man?

It wasn't funny, wasn't original and took three attempts to get through. It's basically a rip-off of Old Harry's Game but without the humour, plot or characterisation of Andy Hamilton's writing.

Has Working for the Big Man put you off other books in this genre?

Not at all - other series in the radio comedy genre can be excellent such as Cabin Pressure, Bleak Expectations etc.

Did the narrators do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

The actors were distinct in theri characterisations and the cast includes Kevin Eldon which frankly should ensure laughs - writing something that makes Eldon unfunny is a definite fail.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It wasn't as bad as some of the other pilots in the Audible Originals lot.

Audible - Yes, Original - No

This sounds a lot like an "Old Harry's Game" rip off, but I like "Old Harry's Game", so that's OK! This was my favourite of the pilots, because it was funny and the idea seemed to offer a starting point for more episodes.

Has potential

Would you listen to Working for the Big Man again? Why?

Yes, like most pilot episodes it has to spend time establishing the characters but the idea was good and well executed.

What did you like best about this story?

The transposition of an everyday working environment into the afterlife.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The dodo debacle.

Any additional comments?

if this became a series I'd certainly be interested in hearing more. There's plenty of scope for developing some interesting plot lines.

Well I enjoyed it

I have decided to review these as pilt episodes for a potential radio comedy seres This prouction treated its audience as intelligent with some witty angles on life and death. However It lacked the staying power for a long series.

Heavenly but not quite God-like

What disappointed you about Working for the Big Man?

From the off I was put in mind of Old Harry's Game by Andy Hamilton. Unfortunately this particular script doesn't come off too well in the comparison. There was the odd line that raised a smile, but on the whole it felt like it was torn between trying to emulate Hamilton's work and trying to be it's own thing, and being a little too timid to succeed at either.

Would you ever listen to anything by Rob Sears and Tom Sears again?

I wouldn't specifically *avoid* them if their work appeared/was credited on the radio, but I might not *buy* their work until I'd heard something I liked more.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

Mitch Benn is a reliable presence delivering his standard 'God voice'.

Any additional comments?

Not the weakest of the 5 pilots, but I think that's largely down to Benn's performance.

Feels like it's been done before, & done better

The irreverent tone, theme and characters reminded me of Old
Harry's Game, set in Hell and featuring puny humans coping with Satan's stormy moods and ingenious plans to conquer humanity. I was entertained for 28 minutes, performances and production was faultless with effective sound effects but wonder if a series could be built on a single joke..

Best of the five pilots

Although it takes a while to get into its stride Work for the Big Man turned out to be quite a funny take on God and religion without being offensive. If it gets made into a full series it will be interesting to see what else the main characters will have to do for their boss.

The acting is spot on, and the music every time God enters adds to the humour, although some of the sound effects used were somewhat awkwardly placed at times. Not really an issue but sometimes takes away from the story.

Heaven as an office

It is funny, a lot better than some of the other sitcoms on audible. Recommend it

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The Idea has been seen before and did not really work. Acting talent tried but limited what it could do.

Not New Idea

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Perhaps, it felt quite similar to the series 'Harry's Game', so if they liked that. Not that original concept but nicely executed.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Actors were good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did do this.

Not exactly original, but listenable
