About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Why do I feel so overwhelmed?
Is everyone else achieving more than me?
Why did I say that embarrassing thing?
What can I do to actually make a difference?
Am I the only one who feels this way?

Gemma Styles captures the voice of her generation, giving words to those feelings Gen Z has been trying to explain for years. Drawing on her own experience with mental health issues and neurodivergence, Gemma gets curious about how we tick in order to better understand and navigate the unique pressures of life today.

Featuring the insight of experts and the latest research, Gemma shows that by being curious and compassionate, we can start to feel more hopeful, connected and at peace with ourselves. From how we communicate, to our ambitions and self-image, Gemma paints a picture of mental health in the digital age, including her own journey and ADHD diagnosis to highlight the ways in which women’s mental health in particular is often overlooked or trivialized.

Thought-provoking and heartening, this book is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, less than or that they don't belong.

Why am I like this? is a warm hug, insightful analysis and spirited call to action all in one.

'Authentic and relatable, Gemma demystifies mental health and helps us feel less alone in our daily struggles.' Bryony Gordon

Amazing audiobook for if you struggle with any mental health at all

This was great, I purchased not really knowing what to expect but came out of listening with a new perspective on a lot of things, and it was truly comforting to know I’m not alone with the feelings I encounter and the mental health struggles I go through.

It gave my brain some 'training' even though its not a muscle

an enjoyable listen and thought provoking. Well researched: brain function, activity, how we think, act, react the way we do individually. For me it was well written and read (at the right level) its comforting to know its not just me!

Chapter 4

Were you also singing „Knowing me, knowing you” by ABBA through chapter 4 and forward?

Science as well as the personal experience of being neurodivergent

Will definitely listen again in a while. As a woman with late diagnosed ADHD, this book helped me understand my brain better and somehow also feel less alone.

Best self help book I’ve read (listened to in this case)

Listening to this was like a hug to the part of myself that not many people understand. I loved every second of it. It gave me greater understanding of why I’ve struggled the way I have and gives me so much hope for the future. It’s not easy, but the more you understand your brain the easier it is to be kinder to yourself, which in turn helps you to function better. Gemmas voice is an added source of calm and comfort.

Thought provoking

This was a very thought provoking book, focusing on modern causes for mental health issues. I was hoping it would have a bigger focus on adhd, but I’m still seeking a book that really helps me on this topic.
The basis of the book was well researched and successfully performed by the author.
