Il "Trattato sulla tolleranza" è una delle più famose opere di François Marie Arouet, noto al mondo come Voltaire. Pubblicata in Francia nel 1763 costituisce un testo fondamentale ancor oggi per la riflessione sulla libertà di fede e sul rispetto delle opinioni altrui, in una parola ciò che identifichiamo come imprescindibile in una società definita "civile". Voltaire trae spunto, per quest'opera breve, da alcuni clamorosi errori giudiziari della sua epoca che crearono molto scalpore e finirono in tragedia, e sempre per questioni che lo scrittore definisce "superstiziose": un misto di fanatismo religioso, irrazionalità e incapacità di vedere le gravi conseguenze del ricorso alla violenza gratuita, alla sopraffazione, alla tortura e alla diffamazione per imporre il punto di vista intollerante ed estremo di un'unica religione confessionale (sia essa cattolica, protestante e di qualsiasi altro genere).

Voltaire scava anche nella storia dell'antichità o dei popoli lontani dell'Asia per cercare le origini di un atteggiamento aperto al pluralismo delle idee e ad una visione improntata alla giustizia e alla corretta convivenza fra le genti, secondo i precetti morali di una religione (la sua) "naturale", con una divinità aconfessionale, senza dogmi nè prescrizioni cerimoniali. La conclusione del suo discorso è tutta in quella "Preghiera a Dio" fortemente polemica e nello stesso tempo così poetica.
