Als der Psychologe Kris Kelvin auf einer Forschungsstation auf dem Planeten Solaris eintrifft, findet er eine demoralisierte und psychisch labile Mannschaft vor. Wie Kelvin bald feststellt, halten sich, neben ihm und den beiden Forschern, noch weitere Personen auf der Station auf, was seine Kollegen anfangs jedoch abstreiten.
