Compared to the other books, this one was hard work; taken me many days to finish. Narration excellent. So many threads from other books wind together here, but are not tied to any satisfaction. Maisie's relationship with Strachan goes nowhere.

The themes of black-market, racketeering, reserved occupations, ambulance drivers and banking activity during war time are important but they are not exciting or dangerous like moving inside Nazi Germany as in other books.

You could skip this book in the series and not miss much of substance.

I am always interested in novels that focus on WWII, and Jacqueline Winspears novels are always a real treat. In this one she introduced me to two unknown facts about the war, one involving airforce bases, the other explaining what happened to the Bank of England during the war. Her characters are, as always, convincing portrayals of people one might already know, although Maisie Dobbs herself is unquestionably the star. This is the first audiobook I have listened to, and was very impressed; the voices were of course not quite as I had imagined them, but this was very quickly forgotten, and the story drew me in as her written novels always do. Overall, a big thanks to Ms Winspear and Ms Teal for a wonderful experience.

I am totally hooked on the Maisie Dobbs series and this latest book is as good if not better than the previous ones. The story is gripping and the narration perfect. The only problem is that I found it really difficult to stop listening and stayed awake far into the night to follow the plot! Can't wait for the next one!

Excellent narrator gives spot on performance of intriguing story set in WW2. Lots of accurate and interesting context from author's own family wartime experience.

This narrator has peopled this offering with hooray Henries and Henrietta’s shrieking at each other or characters unable to pronounce the letters T , Th , D , and ing . The whole thing is embarrassing in the extreme and a complete insult to the intelligence .
