About this listen
Si Morley is bored with his job as a commercial artist, and his social life doesn't seem to be going anywhere. So when he's approached by an affable ex-football star and told he's just what the government is looking for to be part of a top-secret project, he doesn't hesitate. One night he steps out of his twentieth-century New York apartment into the winter of 1882 and finds a kind of Eden.

Fantastic story

The concept is almost believable and so engaging I wish I could will myself back and pick a winning lottery number...
I believe the book upon which the film Somewhere in Time is based took ques from this. I can see that. The thought process of willing yourself back in time in particular.
Jeff Harding, who I normally hear narrate Jack Reacher books is on top form here as well.
Superb.

Any additional comments?
I'm not sure where that 17 hours went and was surprised when I realised that the end of the story was upon me!Although excited to read it (listen) I had gone into the book with a little scepticism, wondering if being written in 1970 would detract from how it would resonate with me but I needn't have worried, it really makes no difference. I can only think that written today there would have been more reference to IT/technology and style/approach to media/publishing, given Si's (the main protagonist) job. I actually quite enjoyed that aspect, it added another dimension of interest, listening to normal life at that time also.
The bulk of the story is told in the 1880's, where Si travels back to, on a government mission, via a hypnotic form of time travel - as in he enters a hypnotic state in order to 'will' himself there, as he is blessed with an amazing ability, somehow! The vivid descriptions both of how this is built up and then he travels, to the actual experience in the 1880s are just brilliant. The imagery you want from a story, that escapism, it's all there to immerse yourself into.
I have a couple of criticisms - New York is described in intricate detail and this is wonderful until, for me, it began to overtake the story and become a little tedious. If you live in or come from New York then perhaps this lengthy detail is fascinating but I found myself wishing the story would get a move on. I also felt the characters could have been fleshed out more, especially Si and a woman he meets in his time jump, Julia. There was some depth lacking there for me and whilst the place descriptions were atmospheric (and lengthy) the characters often felt quite two-dimensional.
My criticisms aside, I can fully understand why this book was recommended by Stephen King in his 11.22.63 epic - whilst not equalling the depth of story-telling of that novel for me, Time And Again is absolutely up there amongst my favourites of this genre - I don't often read/listen to books twice however I most certainly will revisit this one again.
A 'timeless' timetravel classic

Jeff Harding was a good narrator with good characterization. An unusual book for me but nonetheless very enjoyable.
Makes you wonder ‐ what if .......

just slightly confused with part of the ending. looks like he jumped further back in time (but not stated) and then forward in time a bit (but again not stated)
Enjoyable and descriptive

Enjoyable but a little dated and predictable.
