The Sunday Times Bestseller

If change is the natural order of things, why do so many people struggle with the milestones of life - from first jobs and first loves to children leaving home and retirement?

We live in a culture of limitless choice - and life is now more complex than ever. In This Too Shall Pass, acclaimed psychotherapist Julia Samuel draws on hours of conversations with her patients to show how we can learn to adapt and thrive during our most difficult and transformative experiences. Illuminated by the latest social and psychological research, this book unflinchingly deals with the hard times in family, love, work, health and identity.

From a woman deciding whether to leave her husband for a younger lover, to a father handling a serious medical diagnosis. And from a new mother struggling with the decision to return to work, to a young man dealing with the aftermath of coming out, and a woman starting over after losing her job.

These powerful, unforgettable and deeply intimate stories about everyday people will inform our understanding of our own unique response to change and enlighten the way we approach challenges at every stage of life.

Don't expect much

Having the author reading the book was a bad idea. It's boring and she tries to give more importance to parts that are nearly useless. Overall this has nothing I was expecting, but it does help falling asleep if one can pay close attention to the voice

Thank you for showing your work

There are some big hitters in the self development space, and there have been two phrases that have always stuck with me.

1) Show your work.
2) Don’t die with the music inside you.

Julia Samuel has and won’t. Bless you kind lady, and thank you.

People buy people (is what we hear in the marketing space), and Julia brought a small army of people to this book that will undeniably promote the fact, that we as people, buy the stories of people, and with such a diverse range of stories from different people in this book, you’ll have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) if you’re an investor in people and don’t at least try a sample of this book.

What I loved about Julia’s narrative were the wonderful ways she would describe her clients. I pictured them with clear focus of exactly what they must of looked like, even though I’ll never meet them.

Julia’s message was about the one constant in life, which paradoxically, is change, but I found it to be a book about self belief and knowing whatever s*** you’re going through, that too shall pass.

The topics that Julia explored have all impacted our lives in some way, even if it’s off your radar, I would say there’s someone that you can relate to who Julia has presented here in this book.

It’s a gorgeous book giving you, not only insightful methods and models of her therapy but it leaves you with some proven “self help” tools that can help you in the transition of change.

I will abide by Julia’s instructions and keep this book not too far away, and dip back into it when stillness needs to produce movement.

Deep ideas accessibly written.

I wish I had listened to this book when I was younger as I can relate to many of the scenarios regarding change . It is an honest narration by the author, but I think it would have been better to have a professional narrator.

A must for trainee counsellors

I am a student counsellor studying Person Centred Approach and found this book absolutely invaluable. Author gives insight into common issues that clients might bring into therapy room, she beautifully and tentatively tells clients stories, unfolding therapeutic relationships and her own process, and even mentions issues that she takes to supervision.
I opted for an audio version and found author's voice and manner of speaking very gentle and calming.

Excellent in every way.

I absolutely loved this book and will listen again at some point ( and it's rare for me to ever consider going back to a book I've already heard). I'm a trainee counsellor so found this book particularly interesting and helpful...but I believe it would be equally as enjoyable to a layperson.

Interesting

An interesting book from the perspective of the counsellor. Good Narrative. Certainly shed a little light on how to view my own situations from other angles.
