Fascinating, insightful and powerful
Fiona Hill’s life story is riveting. In telling it, she brilliantly and expertly sums up all that needs fixing in 21st century politics and how to fix it.
Having escaped England’s deprived North East, Fiona found herself at the centre of politics in Trump’s White House. Appalled by his populism and narcissism, she was not surprised that so many Americans supported him. This book should be compulsory reading for politicians and anyone in a position of authority.

Interesting, structured piece of writing
Culturally and historically interesting and coherently explains the sense of displacement caused by lack of policy in post industrial areas in the UK and US. The solution to these woes is a vast collective effort across multiple platforms: easy to imagine but seemingly impossible. The authors of Deaths of Despair considered college education as the great panacea - is it ? is everyone capable of graduation?
Well worth reading but repetitious towards the end and overlong.

Different
Wasnt sure about this book. It was part biography part political and part social science , just felt something was missing -possibly because in my humble opinion none of these themes were given the weight to make them outstanding - i felt she held back in some areas. She clearly has an inspirational story well worth listening to but instead of being great it comes across as earnest.

I've recommended this audiobook to many people
Fiona Hil's story is fascinating and well-told. Proof that dedication, intelligence and a British sense of humor (humour) can go a long way in helping to shape one's life. I've recommended this audiobook to many people in the both the UK and US, and can assure you that hers is a remarkable story that you will learn a lot from.

An inspiring life story and even better to listen to Fiona narrating it
A great listen and a wonderful life story - Fiona's academic and career journey is so impressive. Like her I grew up in North East England, however I did so within a more financially secure family environment. I am full of admiration for what Fiona has achieved and that she has thrown a much needed spotlight on the "left-behind" areas of the UK (and US). So much untapped talent going to waste, so few opportunities in those areas and so much failure by governments, both Labour and Tory, to seriously address this dreadful inequality and regional economic imbalance (the worst in Europe).

A compendium of cautionary tales
This is an excellent book. Fiona Hill critically analyses the links between populism, economic stickiness and education showing how they influence opportunity. Fiona draws from her own personal experience of three countries (UK, USA and Russia) and makes the topic real for the reader. Well worth reading!

Many good yarns and an authentic plea
This book is a great 'yarn', really many 'yarns' and an extremely succinct analysis of:
- inequality and place
- sexism
- race and poverty
- education and opportunity
- national finance
- national security
- 'good government' versus populism
In the USA, UK & Russia with a matching plea for action. Fiona Hill brings her vast experience and knowledge to bear on these issues. It probably merits more than one read, by those with the tendency. I applaud the effort, experience and insight that has gone into this work and I hope it moves those who can offer something, to action. Thanks.
