About this listen

Recently widowed and rendered penniless by her Ponzi-scheming husband, Julia Bishop is eager to start anew. So when a stranger appears on her doorstep with a job offer, she finds herself accepting the mysterious yet unique position: caretaker to his mother, Amaris Sinclair, the famous and rather eccentric horror novelist whom Julia has always admired...and who the world believes is dead.

When she arrives at the Sinclairs' enormous estate on Lake Superior, Julia begins to suspect that there may be sinister undercurrents to her "too-good-to-be-true" position. As Julia delves into the reasons of why Amaris chose to abandon her successful writing career and withdraw from the public eye, her search leads to unsettling connections to her own family tree, making her wonder why she really was invited to Havenwood in the first place, and what monstrous secrets are still held prisoner within its walls.

Critic reviews

"A brisk thriller tinged with gothic elements. . . . Careening through séances and ghostly encounters leaves the reader breathless." ( Kirkus)

Really enjoyed the story. Agree Scottish accent was a bit dodgy but great characters.

I have read other reviews that complain about the narration. I have to say I think they are being very picky. Not great Scottish accent, but I could easily distinguish between eac of the character - something that I have struggled with in other audiobooks.

The story had enough twists and turns to make it interesting and I like the characters - on the whole. The main protaganist did make me want to shake her a coupe of times.
Yes parts of t was predictable, and yes there are some passages that could have been editted, but I enjoyed it.

Enjoyable

Nice background story. Intelligent characters. Entertaining. Would have liked a bit more background into the occult.

I really enjoyed this book rare to find good ghost stories. Can’t wait to listen more of her books

Too many tears in the eyes of all the characters 🙄... For being a ghost story I felt no suspense or mystery. It felt sad and gloomy. Julia, the main character lacks personality and her behaviour end it up annoying me. The same plot could have been more entertaining if the construction would have been less dragging.

Good story, but... exaggerated drama

The story kept me interested all the way through. A good developing plot. Look forward to reading another title.

Kept me guessing to the very end

Otherwise it was fine. Wendy Webb isn't a bad writer but she has a tendency to introduce plotlines she never quite resolves. This is not done in a "let the reader decide themselves way" but in a lazy, she forgot how many plots she introduced kind of way.

The actors Scottish accent was deplorable

Wonderful story although there were times I could have stopped listening because of Julia’s hysteria. Strong characters and beautifully written with occasional fear which made it very enjoyable

Did this reader, and her producer, not understand that ‘library’ has two “r” - her pronunciation of ‘libary’ ruined the telling of this story - started to rankle once I became aware of the constant mispronunciation and I cringed every time she said the word. Gentle spooky story otherwise…
