About this listen

Jack Havoc, jail-breaker and knife artist, is on the loose on the streets of London once again. In the faded squares of shabby houses, in the furtive alleys and darkened pubs, the word is out that the Tiger is back in town, more vicious and cunning than ever.

It falls to Albert Campion to pit his wits against the killer and hunt him down through the city's November smog before it is too late.

Critic reviews

"Miss Allingham is one of the few writers who can deal with art. Both her passions and her patterns are beautiful, accurate and serene" ( Daily Telegraph)
"Margery Allingham has worked her way up to a worthy place among the tiny hierarchy of front-rankers in the detective world" ()
"[Allingham] captures her quintessential quiet detective Albert Campion to perfection... For those who relish classic crime fiction" ( Daily Express)

I remember the eccentric and amusing plots of other books. So tedious and wordy this offering.

Slow and Tedious.

Great story, well read. Found it difficult to take any breaks from listening to it

Most gripping Margery Allingham yet

Margery Alingham's Campian books, brilliant as always. My only complaint is that I just have to keep listening, whatever the hour.

Brilliant as always.

Wonderful tour de force. Allingham's best novel full of her characteristically scintillating dialogue, superbly realised characters, the most powerful being the villain himself, The Tiger, Full of interesting, philosophical layers and a strong sense of time and place, postwar London being one of the stars of the tale. David Thorpe does an absolutely excellent job narrating the complicated story full of varied and powerful characters.

Superb in every way

I love her books and this is the all time best. David Thorpe does a great job here, his rather crisp, detached reading allows the force of the insights and the vitality of the characters to shine. The scene with the Canon and Havoc in the church is unforgettable.

Amazing psychological thriller.

Really enjoyed it up until the end which was awfully disappointing. Really good characters, excellent narration but such a let down at the end. First book by this author I have read, not sure I will bother with another.

Really good up until the end.

Where does The Tiger in the Smoke rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

in the top half - its a good story and well read.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

As with many Audio books, the end is ruined by the production company announcing who they are IMMEDIATELY at the end of the story, thus one cannot remember how the story ended, and my end of story meditation is ruined.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I liked the Vicar - his encounter with the villain was brave,

Any additional comments?

I may go back and read more of this series.

part of this story was on TV about 40 years ago .

This one goes a bit off track as Campion is not the first person, but the victims are, so it seems a bit disjointed at times. But then you would not get the whole story otherwise. Read brilliantly again by David Thorpe.

Does not have the humour of the earlier Campion books. Was just another post war mystery.

Not enthralling

Was hooked on this right from the start, very easy to follow and a great storyline. Would have liked an extra 5 minutes at the end rather than an abrupt finish but very impressed and my favourite of the Albert Campion books that I’ve read so far!

Favourite in series so far!
