About this listen

Ghostly whispers, shocking secrets, and a Pomeranian on the loose …

England, 1941: Evie Harris doesn’t believe in ghosts—not even when she spots a glowing figure outside her bedroom window in the quiet village of Crofter’s Green. But when the same eerie spectre is seen by Lord Hawthorne, tied to a long-buried family scandal, even Evie starts to wonder if the past is haunting Hawthorne Manor.

Before she can investigate, Lord Hawthorne is found dead at the bottom of his grand staircase. An accident? Not likely. When the glowing figure begins tormenting Lady Gwendolyn, Evie rallies the Homefront Sleuths to unravel the manor’s secrets.

As the sleuths dig deeper, the twists keep coming:

  • A furious daughter returns for the reading of the will.
  • Priceless antiques vanish from the estate.
  • And Lady Gwendolyn’s strange behavior hints at dangers far beyond ghostly hauntings.

With hidden passageways, family feuds, and wartime schemes at every turn, the sleuths must race to uncover the truth. Is the danger truly from the dead—or the living?

The Spectre of Hawthorne Manor is a delightfully cozy mystery full of ghostly intrigue, village charm, and sly surprises. Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and T.E. Kinsey — scroll up and One-click now!

I really liked listening to this book and thought Iona Campbell’s voice good apart from the fact she cannot pronounce the Daimler car correctly. It’s not a “Dimeler” but is pronounced “Dameler. I wish narrators would check these pronunciations.

Part 2 is just as good as part 1 with engaging characters and enjoyable mysteries. The fact that this is part of the catalogue is a treat too.

The narrator did a very good job invoicing a different characters. Given the number of female characters it’s better than it was not a man. Men doing voices for women always sounds peculiar but not the other way around. I found my self listening for several hours on the trot which means I was definitely engaged with the storyline. Went and downloaded the third in the series – the Spitfire murders.

Fairly intricate plotting, but with a clear solution at the end

Interesting characters that you care about and excellent narration bringing them to life. Off to download book three.

Great second book.

As the ‘dimeler’ rather than the’ dameler’ ( Daimler) was going up and down to London in this book it did become more annoying than in Book 1 and the Wolseley got strange pronunciation too but I still wanted to hear the story through to the end.

It did annoy in Book 2

Loved the story, characters and series. But the narrator cannot do accents and mispronounces Daimler throughout, which is very irritating. Can’t someone tell her how to pronounce Daimler!! Nevertheless a brilliant WW 2 series!

Great story
