About this listen

Five friends, one sleepy village, and a mystery brimming with dark secrets.

England, 1941. The tranquil village of Crofter’s Green seems like a haven from the chaos of wartime. But when a local air raid warden is found dead in the village churchyard, five villagers--some getting on in years and none of them policemen--decide they need to uncover the truth.

Introducing the Homefront Sleuths:

  • Evie Harris, a newly arrived tea shop owner, seeking a fresh start after losing her husband.
  • Alice Greenleaf, the village herbalist, who has her own quiet strength and wisdom.
  • Blake Collins, a war-wounded schoolteacher, struggling with the scars of battle.
  • Harry Jenkins, a sharp-eyed retired detective from London, who thought his sleuthing days were over.
  • Dotty Baker, a resourceful young mother, juggling the demands of wartime life.

Together, they will form a close-knit circle, a found family in a world turned upside down. As they dig into the village’s secrets, they uncover more than just the identity of a killer—they discover the power of friendship and community in the face of adversity. But can they solve the mystery before the shadows of war claim another victim, and will Evie discover her inner culinary capabilities?

The Blackout Murders is a heartwarming, suspenseful tale perfect for fans of cozy mysteries and wartime intrigue. Loved all of the memories of the war, great writing, narration was good and the story had plenty of twists and turns.

The character parts were fine, but the descriptive narration was irritating. Every sentence had an upturned tone which spoilt the story for me.
I seem to be in the minority but I couldn’t unhear it.

Maybe I’m hard to please.

A pleasant story but I felt it lacked depth. Obviously written by Americans with no real flavour of rural England during the war - too cutesy and simplistic, it just didn’t ring true to me in any way. The narration was good (switching between accents) but again, clearly aimed at the US market, which I found irritating because it was set in wartime England. It lacked authenticity for me.

Clearly written by Americans for a USA audience

Just meh. The narrator was bland, the story was slow and boring. Thankfully this was free

Nothing stood out, bland and boring

I enjoyed the little end chapter of notes about the historical details used and what the people actually did with the items mentioned.

I enjoyed the historical accuracy of the book and how well it brought environment and feelings to life

The sleuths are all great characters, bringing something different to the (literal) table and the villains are also good. The story too develops nicely. I look forward to the next.

Great sleuths
