Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The second book in the Sally Lockhart quartet, narrated by Adjoa Andoh.

An elderly lady loses her money on an investment, a conjuror is pursued by thugs, and a clairvoyant mentions the name of the richest man in Europe and his mysterious company. Seemingly unconnected events set Sally Lockhart on the trail of an evil far more awful than she could ever imagine.

Fabulous story, brilliantly read

Kept teenagers and parents spell bound for 12 hour journey. Andoh's accents added to drama.

Brilliant, sad, great sequel!

This story did not fail to keep me guessing right until the end of what was going to happen, great to see the character Jim come into his own and sad but lovely ending!

Adjoa Andoh’s narration is incredible!

I love Philip Pullman but these stories are made even more magical by Andoh’s brilliant narration. The many different voices, the feeling and thoughtful performance in her dialogue make listening an absolute pleasure!

Amazing story

Absolutely amazing and even better than the first one. I love the story but I do have one complaint. WHAT HAPPENED TO ADOLADE! It didn’t tell me but that was actually one of the reasons I began to read book 2.

Really disapointed

We are pullman fans but we gave up on this after an hour. Gave it a good try but, sorry, not for us.

Not as good as The first one

The story was not as good as Ruby in the Smoke but still entertaining. The biggest disappointment for me was the change in narrator. Andoah Adjoh is a good narrator but she exaggerates dome of the voices too much and in particular, the voices she gives Sally and Fred don’t suit them at all, which, seeing as they are the main characters, is quite jarring. I wish they would have stuck with Anton Lesser.

Not as engaging as the first book and narrator couldn't convince

I just couldn't connect with the characters at all with this audiobook, unlike the first book and I think it was mostly due to the narrator who over egged accents and offered no subtlety with the characters at all, so they grated and took away from the plot. I don't think the plot was the strongest anyway, a bit derivative and not very compelling, but the narrator definitely didn't help!
