Summary
The latest from the writer of BBC smash hit drama Crossfire, and Number One Sunday Times Bestseller Louise Doughty
Bird is a woman on the run. One minute, she's in a meeting in her office in Birmingham - the next, she's walking out on her job, her home, her life. It's a day she thought might come, and one she's prepared for - but nothing could prepare her for what will happen next. As she flees north using multiple disguises, Bird has to work out who exactly is on her trail, and who - if anyone - she can trust. Like many people, she has fantasised about escape for a long time, but now it's actually happening. Is her greatest fear that she will be hunted down, or that she will never be found?

Liked it
I liked the main character but the story was a bit slow at times. However, that is not a complaint. it was a bit more literary than I usually read and I would like to read more by this author having loved Appletree Yard and Platform 7.

The story
The narrator is great. I’ve listened to her read other books and it convinced me to read this one too.

Good.
I really enjoyed this novel. Aside from anything else, it’s refreshing to have a 50-year-old woman who isn’t weak as the main protagonist. I was a little disappointed with the last couple of chapters however. They seemed a bit rushed and not as considered as the rest of the book.

Tense thriller
An absorbing and engaging thriller that twists and turns in a way that keeps you guessing about who can be trusted and who cannot. A great listen.

Really dull and dreary
Don't get the rave reviews, the whole book is read in the same monosyllabic tone all the way through, no feeling, no emotional, no suspense... just really dreary?

Just Because You’re Paranoid Doesn’t Mean They’re Not Out To Get You
I heard about this book at the Edinburgh book festival. Hype was about, excitement was high. It’s an adventure tale. A young woman, working for one of the secret services, picks up on an oh-so-subtle clue that she’s in danger, and runs. She runs very comprehensively, cleverly and with considerable trouble to herself. It made me want to write a different novel, one in which all the above happens, then, after the heroine has gone to ground in far flung somewhere-or-other it turns out she had the wrong end of the stick in the first place, and nothing untoward was ever going on at all. Of course in Louise Doughty’s “A Bird In Winter” the heroine’s paranoia turns out to be well founded. They really are out to get her. But she gets them, ha-ha, bravo! It’s about one part exciting action to four parts mooning about, self-reflection, remorse, quotidian hum-drum, relationships and so on. I can’t help thinking that’s because it’s a drama written by and about a woman - women in fact. I enjoyed it, especially the exciting bits.

Great storytelling beautifully written
This had me hooked straight away - writing is superb as is the narrator. She has the knack of making her characters feel real and likeable from the first chapter.

Attention to detail of everyday life make this an interesting read
Following the story of a woman who ends up in the secret service and getting herself into trouble. I enjoyed the book, it kept my interest. But I got irritated by the narrator's habit of pausing every 5 or 6 words and breaking sentences up into tiny phrases. It really affected the flow and was unnecessary
