Summary

The last time Esther Wilding's beloved older sister Aura was seen, she was walking along the shore towards the sea. In the wake of Aura's disappearance, Esther's family struggles to live with their loss.

To seek the truth about her sister's death, Esther reluctantly travels from Tasmania to Copenhagen, and then to the Faroe Islands. On her journey, Esther is guided by the stories Aura left behind in her treasured journal; seven fairy tales about selkies, swans and women, alongside cryptic verses Aura wrote and had secretly tattooed on her body.

The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding is about the far-reaches of sisterly love, the power of wearing your heart on your skin and the way life can transform when we find the courage to feel the fullness of both grief and joy.

‘Another spell is cast by Holly Ringland. I was swept away by this triumphant and luminous story.' – Myfanwy Jones

Loved the magical storytelling

This book is now one of my favourites - the imagery and connected storytelling is just so well done. I love the themes throughout and the folklore and fairytales. Living overseas, I loved hearing about Australia and it's stories too. Truly emotive and evocative. It made me cry and was so beautiful.

Beautifully written

A book that I was so genuinely sad to finish because I was fully invested the whole time. Incredible characters, woven with folklore and rituals and tales of womanhood. the narration was also spot on. Will definitely be listening again.

Twisted tale of self discovery

A rich tale held together with myth and folklore. Showing how threads connect us together globally. Esters journey to discover who her sister really was becomes a self healing journey of friendship, community, love and enlightenment.

A beautiful story.

Unlike anything else I read before.

I adore Holly Ringland, the love and care she puts into her books and her love for story jumps from each page.

Very moving, difficult listen if recently bereaved.

At the beginning I almost stopped listening because it’s a book about a bereavement so it’s quite intense and I do think it’s a little slow in places. Very glad I continued. The great detail the author goes in to about every conversation & describing everything means you do feel very familiar with the characters & feel very invested, you realise later that all the little details are really important. I cried quite a few times & sometimes had to have a little break before a carried on! I hit quite emotionally involved. I think it would have been difficult for me if I had listened this closer to my own experience of loss, but it was deeply healing in a way going through Ether & the other’s experience of grief. It’s quite personally relevant and with magical metaphors that I could relate to. Overall, a really beautiful story and I’m so glad I listened to it. I got really deeply involved with it and couldn’t stop listening in the end.
