Critic reviews

"Atmospheric and arresting, The Quaker reveals 1960s Glasgow in all its lurid shades." (Val McDermid)

"This is a terrific novel, dark, powerful and beautifully written. I finished it a while ago, but I'm still haunted by the characters and the place." (Ann Cleeves, best-selling author of the Shetland and Vera crime series)

"Another atmospheric, scary and utterly brilliant book from Liam McIlvanney. Superb." (Adrian McKinty)

Although the Scottish accent was difficult to understand at times, the twists and turns of the plot, the descriptions of characters and scenes, the ever moving forward of the story line kept me interested right to the end, a rare occurrence. Brilliantly written and effectively read.

For once I listened to the very end.

I really enjoyed this story
I did guess who the Quaker was but not the rest
I chose this book initially because I’ve really enjoyed Angus Kings narration in other audio books
But this time there were quite a few mispronunciations and if the story was set in Glasgow there wasn’t one person from Glasgow in it - maybe they’d all moved through from Edinburgh …..

Great story

Good story, although a little slow to get going. Clearly based on the so called 'Bible John' series of murders. However, brought to life with twists and turns. Looking forward to Book 2! The narration was fabulous! Loved it!

Based on a legendary true story ..

This book by Liam McI is one of the best Tartan Noir books in the genre. Not only is the writing tight and the plot engaging, it evokes 60s Glasgow brilliantly. Very well narrated as well. This is one for those who are fans of Rebus, et al.

Love the narration of this book nonetheless the story was full of twists and turns I found the second half of the book gripping not sure where it would lead.
