About this listen

It all happens so quickly. One day you're living the dream, commuting to work by riverbus with your charismatic neighbour Kit in the seat beside you. The next, Kit hasn't turned up for the boat and his wife Melia has reported him missing.
When you get off at your stop, the police are waiting. Another passenger saw you and Kit arguing on the boat home the night before and the police say that you had a reason to want him dead. You protest. You and Kit are friends - ask Melia, she'll vouch for you. And who exactly is this other passenger pointing the finger? What do they know about your lives?

No, whatever danger followed you home last night, you are innocent, totally innocent.

I enjoy Louise Candlish books & was looking forward to this.
Story was good, although I didn’t like the lead character. Plenty of twists, even when you guessed some elements- it was still groping.
However the narration was flawed with persistent swallowing noises, saliva & odd & loud breaths being taken within phrasing. It really spoiled the book/story - once you are aware of it, you can’t ignore it- it was horrible - I persevered to the end but felt this shouldn’t have gone out in this state. I listen to a lot of audible books, but there was no way there was any quality control undertaken on this recording.
Disappointing & distracting on a good story.

Narration flaw

Louise Candlish has to be one of the most talented creators of complicated, twisty timelines in the psychological/ thriller genre. Her plots are always excellent and the narratives are invariably based on ‘simple’ aspects of everyday life, things that are familiar and accessible to the reader and yet in the hands of this ingenious author make for riveting reading.
This novel is no exception. It follows a friendship between two couples and explores how simple friendship can turn into betrayal and how things are not always as they seem. There are red herrings to confuse the reader, copious amounts of intrigue and tension and moments of huge shock. The plot kept me guessing right to the end and the final twist was a really satisfying one.
The narration was excellent, with just the right amount of creepiness about the voice to make the listener uncomfortable with the central character and question whether he is just naive or a manipulative, conniving wrongun.
Hugely entertaining. I really loved it.

Fiendishly clever plotting. Brilliant.

Loved the story line and how it kept me on edge especially near the end. The characters were clearly thought about and were portrayed by voice actors very well

Great listen! Never knew which way the book was going!

I’m a bit undecided on this book. At first I wasn’t that into it as I didn’t particularly like any of the characters but then about 2/3rds of the way through I couldn’t stop listening. It had some really good twists at the end that I wasn’t expecting. My only issue with the narration was that I kept picturing David Tennent when the main characters wife spoke with a Scottish accent. I pictured her with a beard which did make me chuckle😂

Some good twists but a slow starter.

This is a great story & the reader does it justice in the main .. a little melodramatic in places but forgivable.. the problem I had with it was that he’s clearly got a dry mouth much of the time & there’s a pretty constant ‘sticky mouth’ noise which is quite distracting if you notice it. Probably won’t bother most people but if you are one of those who picks up on odd noises .. you might want to check out the sample first before committing.

Fabulous story well told but unfortunate noise

I'm unsure of other's reviews when the write of noises, sighs and breathing. . the narrator was superb..I felt so connected to his expressions, he allowed me into the characters..excellent narration.
I was a tiny bit disappointed with the swift end but I say no more on that.
I was engaged...so many books now available give no idea on content and whoops there goes another wasted credit but if you are excited by twisting, unguessable, unpredictable stories please listen to this you will love it

brilliant on all levels!
