About this listen

'One of the most interesting detectives in crime fiction' THE TIMES
'Penny combines clever plotting with beautifully evocative descriptions' DAILY EXPRESS

There is more to solving a crime than following the clues.
Welcome to Chief Inspector Gamache's world of facts and feelings.

Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. His boundless sense of adventure and vivid imagination mean he has a tendency to concoct stories so extraordinary and so far-fetched that no one can possibly believe him.

But when Laurent disappears, former Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is faced with the possibility that one of his tall tales might have been true.

So begins a frantic search for the boy and the truth. And what Gamache uncovers deep in the forest leads back to crimes of the past, betrayal and murder, with more sinister consequences than anyone could have possibly imagined . . .

Millions of fans worldwide.
One inimitable Chief Inspector Gamache.

story line, perhaps with too many strands, but still very worth listening to, like all the Gamache novels.

compelling but ultimately implausible

loved it as much as the others. can't wait for the next one! I don't often read a book twice, but have done so with all of these.

my favourite author.

Another belter from Louise Penny. Over a long series quality can often dip. Not in her case. Book one was very good but, if anything, the Gamache series has done nothing but improve.

Another belter from Mrs Penny!

I literally gallop through each and every minute of these inspector Gamache mysteries. The narration is absolutely sublime. The stories and characters are addictive and I am racing through the whole series.
They are now my favourite books ever.

Brilliant!

This book is an excellent addition to this series. I thought the narrator made it even more excellent, with distinct voices for every character and beautiful pacing.

What a narrator!!

Another good read with a storyline that kept me guessing. Slightly confused about Gamache role in this story and has way too much influence over the investigation for a retired police officer.

Another good read

Inspector Gamashes stories are touching crime stories that are easy to listen to and love all the main characters which take us through beautiful Canadian nature and their seemingly boring lives. But not to get mislead by this, everybody in Three pines village goes through their thrilling adventures leading into mysteries solved by the intelligent, thoughtful chief inspector.
If you looking for a gentle thriller without violence or appalling language this is the crime series that hook you up.
I am a literary binge-listening because of the great narration of Adam Sims. His performing skills are the best for audiobooks especially the ability to change accents.
Each character in Gamashes books has its own voice and accent which takes us through every book.
I cannot recommend these books highly enough.

Gripping, exciting with the best narration ever

Perfect narration by Adam. Many twists and turns. If only Three Pines was real. Now moving swiftly on to the next book in the series.

Excellent. I was sorry when it ended.

I have loved every single book in this series. All different and yet all with the power to make me think beyond the story. I thoroughly recommend these books.

The narration is worthy of the author - an exceptional combination.

Brilliant

I’ve loved this series but this seemed nothing like the previous books. It felt like “Murder she Wrote “ (don’t judge me, remember when there were only 5 tv channels?!). This tiny village which “isn’t even on a map”, seems to be the epicentre of crime, and this was trivial and bumbling, sad to say. The last 3 hours were not worth the plod of the previous 9. I’ve already purchased the rest of the series so I hope it gets back on form.

Sadly, disappointed!
